Differences Between Containers and Houses
Admin September 16, 2026
There are differences between container houses and traditional houses in terms of structural foundation, materials, design flexibility, uses, construction period, cost, environmental protection, and fire and rust resistance. Details are as follows:

- Structural foundation: Container houses use fixed container-size modules as the building foundation, typically using standard containers for modification. Traditional houses, such as light-steel houses, are not based on container-size modules; their structural systems are more diverse, such as using reinforced concrete beams, slabs, and columns for load-bearing, with walls serving as filler materials.
- Materials: Container houses are primarily made of steel, usually high-strength steel, which offers high strength and corrosion resistance. Traditional houses use a wider range of materials, such as bricks, concrete, and wood.
- Design flexibility: Container houses feature modular design, allowing flexible combination according to needs, with the house area adjustable as required. Traditional houses also offer high design flexibility, but container houses have a relative advantage in terms of combination and mobility.
- Uses: Container houses are suitable not only for construction sites and temporary residences but also for temporary activities such as wild camping, markets, and exhibitions. Traditional houses have a broader range of uses, including permanent residences, commercial buildings, and industrial buildings.
- Construction period: Container houses have a short construction period, with a single container taking only 10 to 20 days to build and modular buildings taking only 20 to 40 days to deliver. Traditional houses have a longer construction period, with steel-concrete structure buildings taking as long as 190 to 300 days.
- Cost: The construction cost of container houses is usually lower than that of traditional residences, especially in areas with limited land resources or expensive building materials. Their rapid construction speed and mobility also help reduce overall living costs. The cost of traditional houses varies depending on materials, design, and construction factors; generally, permanent houses have higher costs.
- Environmental protection: Container house materials are recyclable and environmentally friendly with low carbon emissions. Traditional houses are also improving in terms of environmental protection, but some traditional building materials may have a certain impact on the environment.
- Fire and rust resistance: The fire resistance of container houses is a potential weakness, as steel structures can melt under high temperatures and are at risk of rusting. The fire resistance of traditional houses varies depending on materials and design; generally, traditional houses such as brick-concrete structures have better fire resistance.
