Development of Container Houses
Admin September 10, 2026
Container houses have grown rapidly, with notable progress in origins, applications, technology, and markets.

Origins and early use: The container house idea grew from mid-20th-century conversion practice after container standardization. London’s Container City I project in 2000 raised public awareness; in China, work began with idle coastal-port containers in the late 20th century and scaled up with urbanization.
Application fields keep expanding:
- Traditional scenes: Stable demand for temporary housing such as construction-site worker dorms and rental units.
- Emerging scenes: Large events—for example, the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games in Japan used container houses for the Athletes’ Village. Cultural tourism—Shanting District, Zaozhuang, Shandong, China built distinctive homestay scenic areas with container houses. Emergency medical—rapid deployment plays a key role in post-disaster temporary buildings. Commerce—brands convert them into 24-hour self-service fitness pods and other innovative spaces.
- Permanent building breakthroughs: Modular tech extends container houses from temporary builds to permanent homes, hospitals, schools, and more. For example, five nearly 100-meter residential towers in Longhua District, Shenzhen, were assembled from 6,028 concrete modules; the share of permanent projects keeps rising.
Technology optimization supports growth:
- Performance gains: Insulation, energy supply systems, and smart management keep improving.
- Modular production: Factories prefabricate independent house modules with main structure, MEP, and interior finishes, then assemble quickly on site.
- Parallel tech routes: Steel modules—light weight, suited to ocean shipping and high-rises. Concrete modules—living feel closer to conventional housing, higher acceptance in the domestic market. Both routes develop in parallel and underpin expansion at home and abroad.
Market and policy dual drivers:
- Policy support: Since 2022, China’s Urban–Rural Construction Carbon Peak Implementation Plan has advanced prefabricated buildings; the 2013 Green Building Action Plan already affirmed their importance.
- Industry clustering: Wen’an County, Hebei, has formed an industry cluster; its “space capsule” smart box houses are already in use.
- Export growth: In Q1 2026, China’s prefabricated building export growth reached 45%; Shenzhen ports exported $233,333,333 of “portable houses” in the first four months, up 19.6% year on year, covering 150+ countries and regions.
