Design Precautions for Fully Automatic Glass Roofs
Loads on fully automatic glass roof glass divide into short-term and long-term categories. Wind and seismic actions are short-term; gravity and water loads are long-term. Short-term loads do not reduce glass strength, but long-term loads accelerate micro-crack propagation on the glass surface, lowering strength over time. Tempered glass has a surface compressive stress layer that inhibits micro-crack growth, so strength reduction differs among float, tempered, and heat-strengthened glass under sustained load.
Based on load direction and stress location on fully automatic glass roof glass, strength divides into center, edge, and end values—each requiring correct application. Strength under long-term versus short-term loading also differs. Glass type and thickness affect strength values and must be distinguished in design.
Fully automatic glass roof clamp connection considerations:
Clamps on glass panels divide into intersection clamps where multiple panels meet and edge-line clamps between two panels. Cross clamps fix at panel corners; edge clamps fix along panel edges.
Adequate gap between metal clamps and glass panels must allow in-plane deformation under load.
For insulating laminated tempered glass, clamps may grip the entire assembly or only the lower laminated layers, with the upper glass bonded by a concealed frame.
Point-supported fully automatic glass roof air and water tightness rely primarily on inter-panel structural glazing. Sealant joint width must ensure function under all conditions. When determining width (between panels, panel-to-gable, panel-to-curtain wall, etc.), consider:
In-plane dimensional change from thermal cycling (±80°C).
Dimensional and shape changes from wind, snow, seismic, self-weight, and maintenance loads perpendicular to the glass plane.
Processing tolerances from tempering, cutouts, lamination, and drilling causing laminate size and diagonal differences.
Glass skylight roof sealant width must also account for installation tolerances during panel and accessory fitting.
