Copper Container House
Copper container houses are not mainstream products. Currently, container houses with steel structures (such as CORTEN weathering steel or galvanized steel) as the core are more common in the market, and the application of copper materials is relatively rare, mostly concentrated in decorative or special structural components. The following analysis is carried out from three aspects: material properties, market status, typical products, and design cases:

I. Material properties limit the popularity of copper container houses
Although copper has properties such as corrosion resistance and aesthetics, its cost is much higher than that of steel structures (the price of copper is about 5-8 times that of steel). Moreover, copper has high ductility and insufficient rigidity, making it difficult to directly replace the main frame of container houses. Currently, most of the so-called 'copper' products on the market are local decorations or copper-clad shell processes. For example, some high-end homestay projects embed copper plates on the surface of containers to enhance visual effects, but the core load-bearing structures still use traditional steel. In addition, copper has high thermal conductivity, and additional insulation layers are required to meet living needs, further increasing manufacturing costs.
II. Steel structures dominate the mainstream market products
According to information from multiple suppliers, the main materials of container houses are generally CORTEN weathering steel or galvanized steel. For example, the 'Jimei' brand products of Xi'an Tengdaxing Housing Engineering Co., Ltd. have specifications of 6 meters × 2.4 meters × 2.6 meters, adopt a steel frame structure, and have features such as wind resistance, earthquake resistance, and strong durability (with a service life of over 20 years). They also support rapid assembly, movement, and customized design. The weathering steel container houses of Shanghai Yuanjue Construction Technology Co., Ltd. improve thermal insulation performance through rock wool sandwich panels and provide solutions for modular commercial streets, homestays, and other scenarios. The price range of these products is from 3672 yuan to 8026 yuan per set (discounts are available for bulk purchases), which is much lower than the cost of copper structures.
III. Innovative applications of copper elements in container houses
Although all-copper container houses are rare, the use of copper materials in local designs is gradually increasing. For example:
- Decorative copper cladding: Some high-end homestay projects weld copper decorative strips or panels on the surface of containers to create a unique industrial-style appearance;
- Structural reinforcement parts: Copper alloy connectors are used to enhance the strength of nodes and improve hygiene conditions by utilizing the antibacterial properties of copper;
- Special functional components: Copper drainage systems or roof coatings can enhance weather resistance and extend the service life of houses.
In addition, there are cases internationally of incorporating recycled copper materials into container renovations, such as the Klein-Hangklip Eco-Cabin in South Africa, which achieves a balance between environmental protection and aesthetics by combining copper decorations with reclaimed wood.
