Container Office Building Case Studies

Admin September 17, 2026

Here are some typical case studies of container office buildings:

Container Project at Itajaí Urban Port, Brazil Designed by architect Rodrigo Kirck Arquitetura in 2016, this project is located at the Itajaí urban port. The core of the project is to integrate sustainability, architectural innovation, and natural art through industrial modular construction concepts. The building consists of two single warehouse volumes, each using two stacked containers with skylights in the middle to introduce natural light and vertical circulation connecting the upper and lower floors. A rooftop garden is set above the containers, enhancing ecological attributes and echoing the villa landscape on the opposite side of the canal. The design emphasizes functional zoning and privacy, achieving barrier-free connections between pedestrian and vehicular entrances through a compact layout, while highlighting the building's uniqueness with contrasting exteriors. Commissioned by a banking institution, the building also integrates commercial spaces such as coffee shops to create a relaxed and harmonious office environment.

Container Project at Shanghai Wisdom Bay Science and Innovation Park Located in Baoshan District, Shanghai, this project was led by a design team including Engineer Liu, Engineer Xu, and Engineer Tan, using over 500 containers of various sizes for renovation. Based on the historical heritage of old industrial buildings, the project creates a compound district integrating cultural creativity, technological innovation, art exhibitions, and tourism and leisure. The original container yard at Yunzao Bang Wharf has been transformed into an office exhibition area combining entertainment and waterfront experiences, covering functions such as exhibition-style offices, leisure and entertainment, community commerce, and art activities. Through modular combinations and spatial reconstruction, the project achieves the integration of industrial heritage and modern creativity, becoming a regional cultural landmark.

Other Representative Cases

  1. Innovative Modern-Style Office Building with Containers in Canada: Focused on minimalist design, this project constructs a futuristic office space through the linear arrangement of containers and reflective mirror materials.
  2. Little Tiny Office Space in Shanghai: Combining container structures with Shikumen cultural elements, this project forms a unique cultural symbol through the collision of traditional brick-and-wood textures with modern metal materials.
  3. Mirror Mobile Studio by Toop Architectuur: Utilizing the standardized dimensions of shipping containers and cladding them with highly reflective mirror materials, this project achieves dynamic interaction between the building and its environment while meeting mobility needs.
  4. Renovation of the B73 Government Office Building in The Hague: By incorporating 'green lung' ecological modules inside the containers and combining them with vertical greening systems, this project creates a low-carbon and environmentally friendly government office space.

These cases demonstrate the potential of container architecture in terms of functional adaptability, spatial innovation, and sustainability, covering application scenarios in commercial, cultural, governmental, and other fields.
