Kang in Container Mobile Houses

Admin September 16, 2026

Container mobile houses can have a kang (a traditional heated brick bed), but customized design and modification are required based on the house structure and usage needs.

I. Structural Characteristics of Container Mobile Houses and the Feasibility of Having a Kang

Container mobile houses are based on standard containers or customized modular boxes, using steel frames and lightweight wall materials (such as color-coated steel sheets and rock wool boards). They have characteristics like mobility, modularity, and rapid assembly. Their internal space layout is flexible and can be divided into functional areas according to needs, providing a structural basis for having a kang.
When having a kang, the house's load-bearing capacity, thermal insulation performance, and space layout need to be considered:

  1. Load-bearing capacity: Traditional mud or brick kangs are relatively heavy. It is necessary to ensure that the container floor and steel frame can bear the load of the kang and its usage. If the house is designed as a multi-story structure, it is crucial to evaluate the load-bearing safety of the lower-level containers.
  2. Thermal insulation performance: The thermal insulation of container wall materials (such as color-coated steel sheets) is relatively weak. If the kang is used for winter heating, an insulation layer (such as polystyrene boards or rock wool) should be added inside the kang, or external insulation materials can be used to improve the overall thermal insulation effect.
  3. Space layout: The clear height inside a container is usually 2.3 - 2.7 meters. It is necessary to reasonably plan the indoor space according to the height of the kang (generally 40 - 60 centimeters) to avoid affecting normal activities or causing a sense of oppression.

II. Design and Modification Plans for Having a Kang

  1. Lightweight kang body design:
Use lightweight materials (such as hollow bricks or aerated concrete blocks) instead of traditional solid bricks to reduce the weight of the kang body. Or design it as a hollow structure filled with lightweight insulation materials like perlite to meet both load-bearing and insulation requirements.
  2. Integrated heating system:
Considering the mobility of container houses, clean energy heating methods such as electric heating kang plates, gas heaters, or air-source heat pumps can be selected to avoid the soot emissions of traditional coal-fired kangs and reduce the complexity of modification.
  3. Modular installation:
Design the kang body as detachable modules to match the modular characteristics of container houses. For example, use bolts to fix the kang body frame, facilitating disassembly during transportation and reassembly to adapt to multiple relocations.
  4. Ventilation and moisture-proof treatment:
Reserve ventilation openings at the bottom of the kang body to prevent moisture accumulation. Lay moisture-proof films at the contact areas between the wall and the kang body to avoid condensation water erosion of the wall materials due to temperature differences.

III. Practical Application Cases and Precautions

In some container house projects in northern regions, the function of having a kang has been achieved through modification. For example, Beijing Falilai Mobile Panel Houses provides customized container prefabricated houses. According to user needs, space for the kang body can be reserved, and electric heating kang plates can be equipped to meet winter heating requirements.
Precautions:

  • Before modification, confirm the structural safety with the house supplier to avoid load-bearing risks caused by unauthorized modifications.
  • Preferentially choose materials that meet fire safety standards (such as Class A rock wool boards) and ensure that the distance between heating equipment and the kang body complies with safety regulations.
  • Consider the airtightness of container houses and reasonably design a ventilation system to avoid carbon monoxide accumulation (if gas equipment is used).
