Container-Loaded Small House

Admin September 15, 2026

It is feasible to load small houses into containers, and this approach has been applied in multiple scenarios. The following is an introduction from different aspects:

Event Accommodation Scenario

At the Nagoya Asian Games, to reduce costs, the Japanese side did not build a large-scale athletes' village. Instead, they used cruise ships, container houses, and hotels to accommodate athletes and officials from participating delegations in a dispersed manner. In the port area of Nagoya, about 200 container-style accommodation facilities were neatly arranged, expected to accommodate about 2,000 athletes and team officials. However, there were also some issues with these container houses. For example, members of the South Korean men's basketball team reported that the beds were too short, and athletes over 2 meters tall couldn't even stretch their legs while lying in bed. There were also problems such as sink leaks and wet floors in the rooms.

Commercial and Export Scenario

  • Domestic Enterprise Exports: In the first four months at the Shenzhen port, the value of "portable houses" exported by enterprises across the country reached 1.68 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 19.6%, with destinations in more than 150 countries and regions. For example, China Construction Integrated Building Intelligent Manufacturing (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. tailored modular houses for Australia. Manufactured on the factory assembly line and transported overseas for on-site assembly, these houses significantly reduced the construction period. Moreover, these steel-structured modular houses integrate insulation, fire resistance, sound insulation, and waterproofing. The construction period is more than halved compared to traditional methods, and they can be repeatedly disassembled and relocated. The amount of construction waste, dust, and noise pollution is also significantly reduced.
  • Application in Foreign Projects: For the MRDC modular hotel project in Papua New Guinea by China Construction Science and Industry Corporation, the complete delivery period for traditional construction would be 14 to 18 months. The modular solution, which includes domestic production, ocean shipping, and on-site assembly, takes only about 7 months in total.

Office Scenario

An office composed of three containers perfectly combines functionality with sustainability concepts. It has an area of about 45 square meters and is equipped with three independent workstations, a small conference table, and multiple storage spaces, with a clever and efficient layout. This container office is environmentally friendly and recyclable. The original steel structure is reused and transformed, reducing the consumption of traditional building materials. Moreover, the construction period is short, and there is less noise and waste during the construction process, which is in line with the development trend of green buildings.
