Container House with Roof Terrace
Admin September 15, 2026
It is feasible to have a container house with a roof terrace, and there are already relevant design cases and applications. The following introduces it from three aspects: design cases, structural characteristics, and application scenarios.

Design Cases
- The Container Villa of Two Sisters: Located in the suburbs, it is transformed from a 12-meter-long container. An open-air balcony area is expanded on the top. The open-air balcony has two floors. The top-floor large platform is spliced with wooden planks, surrounded by pure black metal fences. Comfortable viewing seats are also designed. Around it, winding stairs, small gravel paths, neon light chains, etc., are arranged, creating a wonderful living scene.
- Foreign Creative Designs: British architect Nicholas Lacey and his colleagues made bold innovations by flexibly combining containers to build new places for living and working, such as the "Container City" in the London Docklands area. Due to the urgent demand for houses built with environmentally friendly materials in this area, two such buildings were completed in 2001 and 2002 respectively. In addition, the first recyclable container hotel of the British budget hotel company Travelodge opened in Uxbridge. It used 86 containers prepared in China. Before being shipped to the UK, the gypsum board walls, electrical circuits, and bathrooms were already in place, and only splicing was required.
Structural Characteristics
- Convenient Transportation: It is especially suitable for units that frequently change construction sites. It can be moved as a whole and can be quickly set up and dismantled.
- Sturdy and Durable: It is entirely composed of steel, having strong earthquake resistance and deformation resistance, with a service life of more than 20 years.
- Good Sealing Performance: Strict manufacturing processes give it good water tightness, making it waterproof, fireproof, and corrosion-resistant.
- Flexible Combination: Based on a standard steel chassis, it can derive many combined spaces, such as conference rooms, dormitories, kitchens, and bathrooms. It can also create more types of buildings through the combination of container bodies.
Application Scenarios
- Residential Field: It can serve as a living house for individuals and families, providing a unique living experience, such as the container villa of the two sisters mentioned above.
- Commercial Field: It can be used to build shops, art galleries, etc. For example, the container park BOXPARK is the world's first large-scale temporary shopping center.
- Public Facility Field: It can be used to build student apartments, schools, temporary office spaces, etc. For example, the containerized combined campus of Yanmen Central School in Wenchuan County can meet the learning and living needs of students in the disaster area.
