Wall Tiling for Container Houses
Admin September 15, 2026
Container houses can have wall tiles installed, but appropriate construction methods and materials need to be selected based on the characteristics of container houses.

1. Compatibility between Container Material and Wall Tiling The main body of a container is usually made of steel, with a smooth and corrosion-resistant surface. However, directly tiling on it can easily lead to tile detachment due to the thermal expansion and contraction of the metal. Therefore, pre-treatment of the container surface is required first:
- Base Reinforcement: Weld light steel keels on the steel plate or lay cement fiber boards to enhance the adhesion of the base layer;
- Waterproofing: Seal the seams of the container with waterproof glue to prevent moisture penetration and tile hollowing;
- Interface Agent Application: Apply a special metal interface agent (such as an epoxy resin type) on the surface to improve the bonding strength between the tile adhesive and the steel plate.
2. Selection of Wall Tile Types
- Lightweight Tiles: Give priority to ceramic thin plates or lightweight glazed tiles with a thickness of ≤8mm to reduce the load on the container structure;
- Flexible Tile Adhesive: Use flexible tile adhesive of grade C2TE or above to accommodate the slight deformation of the container;
- Self-adhesive Wall Tiles: The “removable and residue-free self-adhesive wall tiles” mentioned in the reference information can be directly pasted, but their weather resistance for long-term use needs to be confirmed.
3. Construction Key Points
- Gap Treatment: The tile gaps should be ≥3mm, filled with mold-resistant caulk to prevent extrusion and breakage due to temperature changes;
- Zoned Pasting: The container is prone to thermal expansion and contraction in the length direction. It is recommended to paste tiles in zones according to modules, with each zone having an area of ≤4㎡;
- Edge Reinforcement: Use metal trim strips or structural adhesive for secondary fixation in stress-concentrated areas such as door and window openings.
4. Alternative Solution References If there are concerns about the risk of tile detachment, refer to other cases in the reference information:
- Color Steel Plate + Decorative Panel: For example, container-modified houses in Beijing use color steel plate walls paired with PVC decorative panels or wood veneers;
- Paint + Soft Furnishings: Some cases directly apply waterproof paint and enhance aesthetics through soft furnishings such as paintings and curtains;
- Integrated Wall Panels: Use bamboo-wood fiber integrated wall panels, which are easy to install and do not require adhesive.
