Usable Area of Container Houses
Admin September 16, 2026
The usable area of container houses varies depending on their type and assembly method, commonly ranging from 9 square meters to 80 square meters.

I. Usable Area of Single Container Units
- Small Container Houses: Typically measuring 3 meters in length, 3 meters in width, and 2.8 meters in height, with a usable area of approximately 9 square meters. These container houses are relatively small and are generally suitable for scenarios with low space requirements, such as temporary duty rooms and small tool sheds. Due to their small size, there may be a certain degree of material waste during production, so they are usually made only when customers have specific needs.
- Standard Container Houses: Commonly sized at 6 meters in length, 3 meters in width, and 2.8 meters in height, with a usable area of about 18 square meters. These are the more common standard-sized containers on the market, widely used in construction sites and road construction projects. They can serve as temporary dormitories and offices for workers.
- Slightly Larger Container Houses: Often measuring 7 meters in length, 3 meters in width, and 2.8 meters in height, with a usable area of approximately 21 square meters. Mostly used as two-story container mobile homes, equipped with corridors and balconies, they provide relatively more spacious and comfortable living spaces, meeting the living and working needs of more people.
- 40-Foot Container-Modified Houses: According to international standards, the interior floor area of a 40-foot shipping container is approximately 28 square meters. When used to build residential houses, the living area will be less than 28 square meters, resulting in relatively compact spaces. However, there are also cases where a single 40-foot container is modified to have a usable area of about 30 square meters.
II. Usable Area After Assembly and Combination
- Double-Decker Container Assembly: Taking Shandong Guoheng's standard product as an example, a single 40-foot container, after modification, has a usable area of about 30 square meters. When assembled in a double-decker configuration, the practical area reaches 60 square meters, saving 50% of the land area compared to a single-story solution. This is suitable for construction camp scenarios where land is limited but a large number of people need to be accommodated.
- Assembly of Three Containers: For example, a duplex container house assembled from three 40-foot containers, with assembled dimensions of 11.8m × 6.75m × 2.8m, has a usable area of up to 80 square meters. The interior can be reasonably planned to include different functional areas such as living rooms and bedrooms.
