Container House Two-Story Building

Admin September 17, 2026

A container house two-story building typically refers to a two-story architectural structure formed by stacking standard shipping containers. It features fast construction, low cost, and mobility, but has limitations in terms of thermal insulation and sound insulation. It is suitable for scenarios such as temporary housing and rural tourism.

Structural Characteristics and Dimensions

The container house two-story building uses standard shipping containers as its basic units. A single container usually has a length of 6 meters or 12 meters, a width of about 2.4 meters, and a height of about 2.6 meters. By connecting them horizontally or vertically, spaces of different areas can be formed. The two-story design is achieved by stacking containers, significantly increasing the usable area and making it suitable for scenarios requiring functional zoning (such as offices, residences, and commercial spaces).

Main Advantages

  1. High Construction Efficiency: Containers are prefabricated structures, and on-site work only involves lifting, fixing, and connecting them, resulting in a much shorter construction period compared to traditional buildings.
  2. Strong Mobility: The entire structure is easy to disassemble, transport, and reassemble, making it suitable for temporary or mobile needs.
  3. Low Cost: The cost of an ordinary two-story structure is about 800-1500 yuan per square meter, which is lower than that of brick-concrete or steel-structure buildings.
  4. High Structural Strength: The steel container body has good earthquake and wind resistance, and can meet basic safety requirements after reinforcement.

Limitations

  1. Poor Thermal Insulation: Metal materials conduct heat quickly, so additional insulation layers are required in summer, and heating needs to be strengthened in winter.
  2. Limited Space: The width of a single container is fixed, and creating large spaces requires打通 (connecting) multiple containers, which may affect structural stability.
  3. Short Service Life: The service life of an ordinary container in an outdoor environment is about 10-15 years, and regular maintenance of the anti-corrosion layer is required.
  4. Weak Sound Insulation: Metal walls have poor sound-blocking ability, and sound-insulating materials need to be added to meet residential requirements.

Application Scenarios

  1. Temporary Housing on Construction Sites: Such as project department offices and worker dormitories, which can be relocated as a whole after the project is completed.
  2. Rural Tourism Facilities: Homestay guest rooms in mountainous and lakeside areas, combining unique features with the advantage of fast construction.
  3. Commercial Spaces: Pop-up stores, temporary exhibition and sales venues, and other commercial buildings that need to be put into use quickly.
  4. Emergency Housing: Providing transitional housing solutions after disasters.

Construction Precautions

  1. Foundation Treatment: Concrete foundations need to be poured or gravel layers laid to prevent settlement.
  2. Structural Reinforcement: Containers on the second floor are connected by welding or high-strength bolts, and columns are added at corners for support.
  3. Water and Electricity Wiring: Open pipes are used for installation to facilitate maintenance; wires are protected by flame-retardant pipes.
  4. Fire Protection Design: Each floor is equipped with fire extinguishers, and fire exits are reserved when connecting containers.
  5. Rust Prevention: Regularly check the paint surface, and use galvanized steel plates and other corrosion-resistant materials in coastal areas.
