Container House to Be Painted

Admin September 15, 2026

Before painting a container house to be painted, it is essential to focus on aspects such as rust removal, material selection, construction methods, and safety protection. Details are as follows:

Rust Removal and Substrate Treatment

Container houses are mostly made of steel structures, which are prone to rusting when exposed for long periods. Rust must be thoroughly removed before painting. Sandblasting or mechanical grinding can be used to ensure that the substrate surface is free of rust, oil, and dust. If the old container retains its original coating, it needs to be lightly sanded to ensure that the adhesion of the new paint to the old coating, carbon steel, or galvanized substrate reaches level 0 (cross-cut test), preventing peeling and detachment.

Paint Selection and Characteristics

  • Single-component acrylic paint: It is easy to apply, requiring no curing agent or precise measurement. It supports three application methods: airless spraying, rolling, and brushing, making it suitable for complex structures and rusted corners. It has strong weather resistance, can withstand salt spray, ultraviolet rays, rain, and alternating high and low temperatures (-30℃~70℃). It has excellent anti-corrosion properties, effectively preventing rusting of the container body and extending its service life to 8-10 years.
  • Water-based container paint: It is environmentally friendly, with low VOC and no heavy metals, meeting national environmental standards. However, it should be noted that its high surface tension can lead to edge shrinkage and cratering issues on low-surface-energy substrates (such as structural sealants). It requires the addition of a gemini-type organosilicone leveling agent (such as Hyperlev F39) to improve wettability and ensure uniform paint film coverage.

Construction Points

  • Drying speed: Under normal temperature (23℃) conditions, the surface drying time is ≤30 minutes, and the hard drying time is ≤6 hours, which can shorten the construction period and avoid long-term idleness of the container.
  • Abrasion resistance: The paint film hardness should reach 4H or higher, with abrasion-resistant fillers added to resist logistics losses such as cargo loading and unloading collisions and forklift scratches, reducing post-maintenance costs.
  • Fire safety: If used for residential containers, it is necessary to fill them with Class A fire-resistant materials such as rock wool boards and fireproof cotton, and equip them with simple fire extinguishing equipment. Electrical wires and cables should be protected with sleeves, and switch boxes should be made of metal galvanized boxes and installed openly.

Safety and Environmental Protection

Ensure good ventilation during construction to avoid inhaling paint mist. Environmentally friendly paints (such as water-based paints and single-component acrylic paints) can reduce harmful volatiles, meeting outdoor construction environmental requirements and ensuring the health of personnel and the safety of the surrounding environment.
