Container House with Tiled Floor

Admin September 15, 2026

Container houses can be fully tiled, but reasonable design and construction must be carried out in combination with the characteristics of container houses and usage scenarios. Here is a detailed analysis:

Adaptability between the structural characteristics of container houses and tile laying

Container houses are mainly made of steel structures, and the surface of the container is usually metal, which has high structural strength and stability. However, the adhesion between the metal surface and tiles is relatively poor. If tiles are directly laid on the metal surface, methods such as rust prevention treatment and base reinforcement (e.g., laying cement fiber boards or OSB boards) are required to enhance adhesion and prevent tile hollowing or detachment. In some cases, tiles have been used in areas such as bathrooms and kitchens of container houses, and blue gradient tiles have been used to achieve a balance between waterproofing, moisture resistance, and aesthetics, demonstrating the feasibility of tiles in container houses.

Key construction points for tile laying

  1. Base treatment: The metal surface of the container needs to be treated with an anti-rust coating, and cement fiber boards or OSB boards should be laid as the base to ensure flatness and load-bearing capacity.
  2. Waterproofing measures: In wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens, waterproof coatings need to be applied to the base, and slopes should be set up to guide drainage to prevent water penetration from causing rusting of the container.
  3. Tile selection: It is advisable to choose anti-slip and wear-resistant tile types (such as wood-look tiles and matte tiles) and control the weight of individual tiles to prevent cracking due to deformation of the container.
  4. Joint treatment: Containers may undergo slight deformation due to temperature changes. When laying tiles, 1-2mm expansion joints should be reserved and filled with flexible joint fillers to prevent tile arching caused by thermal expansion and contraction.

Applicable scenarios and limitations

  • Applicable scenarios: Tiles are suitable for laying in fixed living areas of container houses (such as bedrooms and living rooms) or areas that require frequent cleaning (such as kitchens and bathrooms), which can enhance aesthetics and durability.
  • Limitations: If container houses need to be moved frequently or stacked for use, tiles may be damaged due to vibration or deformation of the container. In this case, flexible materials such as PVC flooring and wooden flooring can be considered as alternatives.
