Three-Story Container House Building
Case studies of constructing three-story container houses demonstrate their characteristics of rapid construction, flexible design, and diverse functionality, and they can meet different usage needs through reasonable design.

Case 1: Three-story multi-purpose office building in the factory area of Nantong COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry
This building is precisely assembled from 96 specially made housing containers. The container manufacturing took only 6 days, and the on-site assembly took 5 days, resulting in a total construction period of just 11 days, highlighting the core advantage of rapid construction of container houses. Its design balances aesthetics and practicality, effectively improving the office environment through measures such as thermal insulation walls, heat-insulating doors and windows, sound insulation and noise reduction, and ventilation and moisture prevention. This shows that container houses can achieve efficient construction through technological optimizations (such as custom container bodies and integrated modules) while meeting building performance requirements, making them suitable for scenarios with strict construction deadlines.
Case 2: Three-story building on Dukou Road, Sanlin Town, Pudong New Area, Shanghai
This building is stacked from more than ten discarded containers, with a house number sign hanging on the facade. Some areas are used as potted flower rooms, and there is a signboard for the "Container Agricultural Utilization Studio". This case demonstrates the flexibility and diverse functionality of container houses: multi-story structures can be quickly formed through stacking, and the usage can be adjusted according to needs (such as for agriculture, office work, or living). In addition, the use of discarded containers reflects the environmental protection concept of resource recycling, making it suitable for scenarios with limited budgets or temporary usage needs.
Case 3: Three-story residential house in the backyard
This residential house is constructed in layers using 3 containers:
- Foundation treatment: Excavate the foundation and pour a concrete foundation to ensure structural stability;
- Basement construction: Bury the first container underground as a hidden basement, fix and level it, apply external waterproofing, cover it with a thermal insulation layer, and backfill it with soil to solve the moisture problem in the underground space;
- Main structure: Use a crane to lift and install the second container as the main living area, cut openings for doors and windows, and reinforce it with steel beams;
- Top-floor design: Stack the third container as a private upper floor, install metal frames for wiring and piping inside, spray foam insulation to complete the wall surface, and set up stairs to connect the floors.
This case shows that container houses can meet residential needs through layered design and customized renovations, but attention should be paid to foundation reinforcement, waterproofing and thermal insulation, and structural safety (such as steel beam reinforcement), making them suitable for scenarios with personalized requirements for space functionality.
