Starbucks in Container Houses

Admin September 15, 2026

Starbucks has several stores housed in container buildings, such as its first one in mainland China located in the Baoshan Wisdom Bay Science and Technology Innovation Park in Shanghai, a container Starbucks store in Hualien, Taiwan designed by Kengo Kuma, and a container Starbucks store in Seattle, USA. Here are the details:

Baoshan Wisdom Bay Science and Technology Innovation Park Store in Shanghai: This is the first container concept store of Starbucks in mainland China, which opened on September 9th. The store is composed of six containers of different sizes, alternating white and brown, stacked and interwoven to form a two-story structure. The first floor features an interlaced ordering area and dining area, with large transparent glass curtain walls. The second floor consists of two terraces, a dining area, and an aerial corridor, and also includes a small conference room for office meetings. The store integrates coffee, art exhibitions, and 3D printing technology. On the wall of the dining area in an independent container on the first floor, there is a large 3D-printed Starbucks mermaid artwork, while the second floor is adorned with various modern-style coffee-themed art paintings.

Hualien Store in Taiwan: This is the first container store of Starbucks in the Asia-Pacific region, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. The entire building is formed by 29 white containers interwoven and stacked in a grid pattern, creating various private and comfortable spaces. The decorative wall behind the containers is irregularly spliced with the bright colors commonly used by the Amis indigenous people, preventing the pure white containers from looking monotonous.

Seattle Store in the USA: This is the first drive-thru container store of Starbucks, located in the suburb of Tukwila. It is composed of four recycled and refurbished containers. This design not only provides ideas for Starbucks to handle old items in its supply chain but also reflects its commitment to more environmentally friendly and sustainable business development.
