What Types of Container House Spreaders Are There

Admin September 16, 2026

Container house spreaders mainly include fixed, master-slave, parent-child, telescopic types, etc. Based on the telescopic type, there are also rotary spreaders, twin-container spreaders, and movable twin-container spreaders. The core components include twist-lock mechanisms, metal frames, connecting devices, guiding devices, suspension and tilting devices, and safety interlock devices, etc.

I. Types of Spreaders Classified by Structural Characteristics The fixed spreader is a 'specialized player' that can only lift a single-sized container (such as 20ft or 40ft). It has a simple structure, light weight (2-4 tons), is cost-effective, and easy to maintain, making it suitable for scenarios handling a single container type. The telescopic spreader is a 'versatile player' that can freely switch its length within the range of 20ft-45ft. It is automatically adjusted by hydraulic or electric drive and has rich functions (such as optional guide plates), making it suitable for multi-sized container operations. The rotary spreader adds a rotation function to the telescopic spreader, allowing it to adjust the angle of the container to meet special stacking requirements. Twin-container spreaders and movable twin-container spreaders can lift two containers simultaneously by optimizing their structures, improving operational efficiency.

II. Analysis of Core Functional Components The twist-lock mechanism is a key component of the spreader, located at the four corners. It achieves a rigid connection with the top corner fittings of the container through a 90-degree rotation. The working process includes: when the spreader descends, the twist-lock heads align with the corner fitting holes, insert and rotate 90 degrees to lock into the slots. During lifting, the weight is evenly transmitted through the four twist-locks. When in place, they rotate in the opposite direction to release the container. The safety interlock mechanism requires all four twist-locks to be fully locked; otherwise, the system will be locked to ensure operational safety. The metal frame, as the main supporting structure, needs to have high strength and corrosion resistance. The connecting device is used to connect with the hook or chain of the crane. The guiding device assists the twist-locks in precisely aligning with the corner fitting holes. The suspension and tilting device allows the spreader to make fine angle adjustments to adapt to different stacking requirements.

III. Typical Application Scenarios and Adaptability Fixed spreaders, due to their low cost and simple maintenance, are commonly found in freight yards or inland ports that handle a single container type. Telescopic and rotary spreaders, with their high flexibility, are widely used in coastal ports or large logistics centers that handle multi-sized container operations. Twin-container spreaders are mostly used in automated terminals with high container throughput, significantly improving loading and unloading efficiency by lifting two containers simultaneously.
