Renovation of Container Houses into Two-Story Buildings

Admin September 17, 2026

Container houses can be renovated into two-story buildings. The following explains this from the perspectives of practical cases and renovation key points:

Practical Cases

  1. Renovation of a Two-Story Apartment in Shanghai: The designer used four standard containers (3 meters wide and 6 meters long) to construct a two-story structure with a total floor area of 72 square meters. Through vertical stacking and horizontal splicing, independent upper and lower floors were formed, with the lower floor serving as a public activity area and the upper floor as a private resting area, achieving functional zoning and efficient space utilization.
  2. Self-Renovation of a Four-Bedroom, One-Living-Room Residence by a Couple: A couple renovated two 10-year-old used containers over four years into a two-story residence with four bedrooms and one living room. During the renovation, the industrial style of the containers was retained, while internal structural optimizations (such as adding stairs and partitions) and external decorations (such as exterior wall insulation layers and window and door updates) were carried out to meet modern living needs.

Renovation Key Points

  1. Structural Safety: For two-story renovations, the load-bearing capacity of the containers must be a primary consideration. The vertical load capacity of a single container is limited, so it is necessary to reinforce the bottom frame (such as by adding steel beams and welding connectors) or use cross-bracing structures to distribute pressure. In addition, the connection points between the upper and lower containers should be fixed with high-strength bolts, and horizontal tie rods should be installed to prevent lateral displacement.
  2. Space Planning: Regions should be reasonably divided according to functional requirements. For example, the lower floor can be designed as public spaces such as a living room and kitchen, while the upper floor can serve as private areas such as bedrooms and studies. The position of the stairs should avoid the main load-bearing structures, and the slope and step height should conform to ergonomic standards (usually, the slope should be ≤30°, and the step height should be ≤18 centimeters).
  3. Thermal Insulation and Sound Insulation: The metal walls of containers have strong thermal conductivity, so thermal insulation materials such as rock wool and polystyrene boards should be filled between the inner and outer walls, and thermal-break aluminum windows and doors should be installed. For sound insulation, sound-absorbing cotton can be added to the wall cavities, or double-layer gypsum board partitions can be used.
  4. Compliance: Before renovation, it is necessary to confirm the local building codes' requirements for the height, area, fire protection, etc., of container houses. For example, some regions stipulate that the total height of a two-story container house should not exceed 6 meters and that an independent escape route should be provided.
