Container House Profile Sizes
The profile sizes of container houses vary depending on their type and purpose. Here are the common standard sizes and customization ranges:

I. International Standard Shipping Container Sizes The internationally used dry cargo containers (DRY CONTAINER) come in types such as 20-foot, 40-foot, and high-cube containers. Their internal net dimensions are as follows:
- 20-foot standard container: Length 5898mm, width 2352mm, height 2390mm, with external dimensions of 6058mm × 2438mm × 2591mm.
- 40-foot standard container: Length 12024mm, width 2352mm, height 2390mm, with external dimensions of 12192mm × 2438mm × 2591mm.
- 40-foot high-cube container: Length 12024mm, width 2352mm, height 2690mm (external height 2896mm), with a volume increase of about 30%. In addition, there are 45-foot high-cube containers (with an internal volume of 13.58m × 2.34m × 2.68m) and special specifications such as open-top and flat-rack containers. However, these are mostly used for maritime shipping or special cargo transportation and are rarely directly used in building renovations.
II. Sizes of Commonly Used Packed/Quick-Assembled Container Houses in China In domestic construction sites and temporary housing scenarios, modular packed or quick-assembled containers are commonly used. Their standard sizes are as follows:
- External dimensions: Length 6058mm, width 2438mm, height 2896mm (some manufacturers adjust the height to 2500mm or 2700mm).
- Internal net dimensions: Length 5880mm, width 2840mm (some are 2330mm), height 2500mm (high-cube containers can reach 2655mm). These containers can be extended to 40-foot (by joining two containers) or larger spaces through assembly. The wall materials are usually 75mm-thick color-steel glass-wool sandwich panels, and the roof is made of 0.45mm galvanized color-steel plates or glass-wool composite panels.
III. Customized Container House Sizes According to project requirements, container houses can be flexibly customized to non-standard sizes:
- Length direction: Common lengths are 3m, 6m, 9m, 12m, etc. Longer spaces can be achieved through module assembly (e.g., 3m × 6m, 3m × 12m).
- Width direction: Options include 2.5m, 2.55m, 3m, 4m, etc., to adapt to different functional requirements (e.g., shops need wider facades).
- Height direction: The standard height is 2.5m - 2.8m, and high-cube containers can reach 2.9m - 3.2m to meet ceiling height requirements (e.g., for exhibition halls and housing). During customization, the positions of doors and windows can be adjusted, partitions can be added, or special decorations can be made. However, attention should be paid to transportation restrictions (e.g., road height limits and turning radii).
IV. Thickness of Key Structural Profiles
- Bottom frame: The main beams usually use 3.0mm-thick galvanized steel to ensure load-bearing capacity (a 20-foot container can bear about 25 tons, and a 40-foot container about 45 tons).
- Walls/roof: The color-steel plates are 0.45mm - 0.5mm thick, and the sandwich panels have a density of 50kg/m³ - 120kg/m³ (rock wool or glass wool).
- Doors and windows: The frames are mostly made of aluminum alloy, and the glass thickness is 5mm - 12mm. Some use insulated glass to improve thermal insulation performance.
Note: The actual dimensions may have an error of ±50mm due to the manufacturer's craftsmanship, material thickness, and transportation requirements. It is recommended to refer to the drawings or physical objects provided by the supplier.
