Container House on Truck

Admin September 16, 2026

It is generally illegal to place a container house directly on a truck, but the piggyback-style container box model can be legally used on the road if it complies with regulations. Here is a detailed analysis:

Legal Risks of Illegal Modification

According to Article 16 of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China, no unit or individual may alter the registered structure, construction, or features of a motor vehicle without authorization. If a container house is directly fixed inside the cargo box of a truck, it essentially changes the vehicle's purpose (from freight to residential), which constitutes illegal modification. For example, a user who modified a closed cargo van into a motorhome and drove it on the road was fined 500 yuan and had 6 points deducted from their license for altering the vehicle's structure, and was ordered to restore it to its original condition. Additionally, illegally modified vehicles cannot pass annual inspections, and insurance claims may be denied.

Feasible Paths for Legal Modification

  1. Piggyback-Style Container Box Model
The container box is designed as an independent module that can be loaded onto the rear bed of a truck using a forklift or by reversing the truck. When the container box is separated from the truck, the truck can resume its freight function. For example, Chengshi New Energy trucks use a roof-lifting container box design. After lowering the roof, the height does not exceed 2.5 meters, meeting the 'no over-height' standard. The container has windows on both sides and a dedicated door on the right side. It can be lifted by remote control or manually without forklift assistance. For annual inspections, the container box only needs to be removed, and the vehicle can pass the inspection.

  2. Vehicle Modification Registration and Compliant Chassis

    • Modification Registration: Submit the modification plan to the vehicle management office. After approval, re-inspect the vehicle and issue a new driving license. However, most regions do not approve applications to modify cargo boxes into living compartments because it is difficult to change the vehicle's use nature (from freight to residential).
    • Compliant Chassis: Directly purchase a truck chassis with a residential announcement (such as a legally approved motorhome chassis produced by the manufacturer) and make interior modifications within compliance. The driving license for such vehicles is marked as 'motorhome', and they can be used on the road without modification registration.

Key Compliance Points

  • Size Restrictions: The height of the container box should not exceed 2.5 meters, and the length and width should not exceed the vehicle body to avoid over-limit transportation (e.g., over-width can obstruct vision and cause accidents).
  • Functional Separation: No passengers are allowed in the container box while the vehicle is in motion to ensure safety.
  • Annual Inspection Preparation: Before the annual inspection, remove the container box to restore the vehicle to its original condition and avoid rejection due to non-compliance in appearance or structure.
