Container House on Truck

Admin September 15, 2026

Container houses can be placed on trucks, but specific conditions must be met, and legality depends on the specific modification and usage methods.

Legality Conditions

According to the "Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China", it is illegal for trucks to alter their registered structure, configuration, or characteristics without authorization. For example, directly welding or permanently fixing a container to a truck chassis may be considered illegal modification. However, if the container house is an independent module fixed to the truck in a detachable manner (such as via forklift loading and unloading) and does not alter the vehicle's original registered structure, it may be considered legal cargo transportation. For instance, some customized enclosed trucks have independent boxes embedded inside. When not in use, these boxes can be removed by forklift to restore the truck's cargo-carrying function. This design is regarded as the enclosed truck carrying the container house as cargo, which complies with regulations.

Technical Implementation Methods

  1. Modular Design: The container house must adopt an independent structure separate from the truck chassis. For example, in one case, the container house is a separately made unit loaded and unloaded by forklift, allowing the truck to resume normal cargo transportation when not in use.
  2. Fixing Method: Detachable mechanical fixing devices (such as locks and straps) must be used to ensure transportation safety, avoiding welding or permanent connections.
  3. Size and Weight Restrictions: The size and weight of the container house must comply with the truck's carrying capacity standards. For example, a standard container truck has a total length of about 16 meters and can accommodate 20-foot or 40-foot containers. However, oversized vehicles (such as those exceeding 20 meters in length) must obtain an oversized transportation permit.

Practical Application Scenarios

  • Mobile Caravans: Some customized enclosed trucks have container house modules embedded inside, equipped with sofas, beds, air conditioners, toilets, and other facilities to meet the sleeping needs of four people. They can also switch between residential and transportation functions through legal modifications.
  • Temporary Residences or Office Spaces: In scenarios such as construction sites and campsites, container houses can be transported by trucks as independent modules and quickly deployed as temporary residences or office spaces.
