Container House on Highway

Admin September 15, 2026

Container houses can travel on highways if they comply with relevant regulations.

Legal Loading and Size Requirements

  • International Standard Containers: According to relevant regulations, transport vehicles legally loaded with international standard containers (compliant with GB/T1413 - 2023 'Series 1 Containers - Classification, Dimensions and Rated Masses') can enjoy highway toll reduction policies under certain conditions. For example, in Jiangxi Province, international standard container transport vehicles that enter and exit the Jiujiang Hongguang Integrated Hub Terminal and Nanchang Longtougang Integrated Terminal and are confirmed by the terminals are eligible for free highway tolls. Vehicles that enter and exit provincial multimodal transport demonstration projects, railway container yards, and the Jiujiang City Chengxi Port Container Terminal and are confirmed by the yards and terminals enjoy a 50% discount on tolls, etc. This indicates that international standard container houses that meet the standards can travel on highways as long as they meet the corresponding conditions during transportation.
  • Size Restrictions: Generally, highways have clear height restrictions for vehicles carrying containers, which must not exceed 4.2 meters from the ground. If the overall height of a container house after loading does not exceed this limit, and its length and width also comply with loading requirements, it can legally travel on highways. For example, Shandong Expressway stipulates that the height of vehicles carrying containers must not exceed 4.2 meters from the ground.

Procedure Handling

Transporting container houses on highways falls under the category of oversized cargo transportation. It is necessary to apply in advance to the highway management agency for an 'Oversized Transport Vehicle Permit'. Detailed and accurate information about the vehicle, cargo, and planned route must be provided. Relevant departments will strictly review whether the vehicle's technical condition meets the standards, whether the driver's qualifications match, and the safety of the planned route. Only after passing the review and obtaining the permit can the container house legally travel on highways.

Driving Regulations

  • Vehicles transporting container houses are usually required to travel at night or during off-peak traffic hours to minimize the impact on traffic. They must also follow designated routes that have been strictly evaluated to ensure good road conditions and sufficient bridge load-bearing capacity.
  • Drivers must meet qualification requirements. In addition to having the appropriate driver's license, they must receive specialized training to master special driving skills and knowledge of oversized cargo transportation. At the same time, the vehicle must be equipped with protective devices, warning lights, etc., to ensure comprehensive driving safety.
