Lightning Rod for Container Houses
Admin September 16, 2026
The installation of lightning rods for container houses requires selecting the appropriate type based on the building's characteristics and strictly adhering to installation specifications to ensure lightning protection effectiveness.

Selection of Lightning Rod Types
The lightning protection for container houses requires choosing the type of lightning rod based on environmental risks:
- Ordinary Direct Lightning Rod: Suitable for low-rise container houses, such as temporary construction site housing. It has a simple structure, made of a single metal rod (stainless steel or galvanized steel), with a height ranging from 2 to 60 meters. It attracts lightning through the electric field concentration effect at the rod tip, and the protection range is calculated using the empirical formula R = 1.5h - 2h (where h is the rod height).
- Radiating Multi-Rod Lightning Arrester: Suitable for high-rise or large-area container building complexes, such as warehousing centers. It consists of multiple metal rods arranged in a star or umbrella shape, with a protection radius 1.3 to 1.5 times that of a single rod, forming multiple discharge channels to increase the probability of lightning attraction.
- Early Streamer Emission Lightning Rod (ESE): Suitable for scenarios requiring a large protection range, such as communication base stations or petrochemical tank farms. It has a built-in triggering device that releases an upward leader 15 to 60 microseconds in advance, with a protection radius of 20 to 100 meters, complying with the IEC 62305-3 standard.
Key Points of Installation Specifications
- Height and Position: The lightning rod must be 1 to 2 meters higher than the highest point of the container house. For example, a 10-meter-high house requires a lightning rod 11 to 12 meters high. In a multi-rod system, the main rod should be significantly higher than the auxiliary rods to form three-dimensional protection.
- Materials and Structure: Preferably use galvanized round steel, steel pipes, or stainless steel to ensure conductivity and corrosion resistance. The rod tip can be copper-plated to enhance lightning attraction performance, and the rod diameter must meet wind resistance requirements (e.g., wind resistance strength ≥ 40 m/s).
- Grounding System: The down conductors should be made of galvanized flat steel or round steel, with a minimum of two evenly distributed around the house. The grounding device must be reliably connected to the down conductors, and the grounding resistance should comply with the GB 50057-2010 standard (usually ≤ 10 Ω).
Handling of Special Scenarios
- Mountainous and Wilderness Environments: The grounding system needs to be strengthened, using electrolytic ion grounding rods or deep well grounding electrodes to reduce resistance.
- Decorative Requirements: Copper decorative lightning rods can be selected, such as products made of T2 red copper, which meet lightning protection requirements while also providing aesthetic appeal.
