Container House Knowledge

Admin September 15, 2026

Container houses are habitable or office buildings that are transformed using containers as the basic structural modules, featuring environmental friendliness, flexibility, and low cost. The following is a detailed introduction from aspects such as structural performance, application scenarios, advantages, and disadvantages:

Structural Performance

  • Frame Structure: Common types include welded integral containers and bolt-connected assembled containers. Welded integral containers are welded into shape as a whole in the factory, with strong resistance to deformation, suitable for frequent lifting and movement. Bolt-connected assembled containers use standard plates connected by bolts, with multiple connection nodes in the force path, and the overall stability is affected by the tightness of the nodes.
  • Structural Stability: Under extreme working conditions, container houses from different companies perform differently. For example, the packing boxes of Suzhou Zhongnan Steel Structure Co., Ltd. adopt a full-steel structural frame, with a measured wind resistance rating of Level 12, an earthquake resistance rating of Level 8, and a frame deformation rate of only 0.18%. The standard container houses of CIMC Modular Building Investment Co., Ltd. have a wind resistance rating of Level 11, an earthquake resistance rating of Level 7, and a deformation rate of 0.27%.

Application Scenarios

  • Temporary Housing: Commonly used as workers' dormitories on construction sites and also in wilderness operations and other scenarios.
  • Creative Spaces: Can be transformed into innovative applications such as 24-hour self-service fitness cabins.
  • Post-disaster Emergency Buildings: Due to their rapid deployment characteristics, they play an important role in the construction of emergency medical facilities.
  • Cultural and Tourism Supporting Facilities: For example, Shanting District, Zaozhuang City, Shandong Province, China, uses container houses to create characteristic homestay scenic spots.

Advantages and Disadvantages

  • Advantages: Rapid construction, adopting standardized design and production methods to simplify the construction process; low-carbon and environmentally friendly, pre-fabricated in the factory with zero pollution during on-site construction; high flexibility, can be combined and transformed according to needs; high strength, adopting a steel structural design to withstand severe weather and natural disasters; strong mobility, suitable for temporary residences, mobile offices, and other places; flexible design, can meet different aesthetic and functional requirements.
  • Disadvantages: Insulation and heat preservation issues, the insulation and heat preservation performance of low-end products cannot be guaranteed; sound insulation issues, metal materials have good sound transmission effects, and additional sound insulation treatment may be required.
