Container House Knowledge Encyclopedia

Admin September 17, 2026

Container houses are habitable or office building forms transformed using containers as the basic structural modules. The following provides an introduction from aspects such as origin, types, characteristics, application scenarios, and technological optimization:

Origin and Development: After container standardization in the mid-20th century, with the development of international trade, a large number of discarded containers were left idle. Some people attempted to transform them into living spaces. Early examples, such as Container City I in London, UK (2000), promoted social awareness. In 2013, Brighton, UK, adopted container houses as a solution to the housing crisis. The development of container houses in China began in coastal ports in the late 20th century, and in 2013, the 'Green Building Action Plan' recognized them as an important form of prefabricated buildings.

Types: Based on structure, they can be divided into three categories: traditional cargo container-transformed container houses, newly welded container mobile homes, and detachable container mobile homes. According to their functions, there are residential types, commonly found in construction site dormitories and wild exploration camps; commercial types, such as convenience stores and coffee shops; and special-function types, such as mobile medical stations and command centers.

Characteristics: Advantages include fast construction speed, relatively low cost, environmental protection and energy efficiency, convenient transportation, sturdiness and durability, good sealing performance, derivable combined spaces, and easy disassembly and assembly. Disadvantages include relatively limited space, lower living comfort in single containers compared to traditional houses, and possible inferior sound insulation and moisture resistance compared to traditional buildings. However, with technological progress, these issues are being gradually resolved.

Application Scenarios: In the field of temporary housing, they are used for construction site dormitories, rental housing, emergency housing in disaster-stricken and impoverished areas, etc. In the field of creative spaces, they serve as characteristic homestays and creative studios. In the field of post-disaster emergency buildings, they play a role in rapid deployment. In the commercial field, there are innovative applications such as 24-hour self-service fitness cabins and convenience stores. They can also be applied in other areas such as temporary office spaces and smart waste stations.

Technological Optimization and Research: Continuous technological optimization and research are being conducted in areas such as thermal insulation performance, energy supply systems, and intelligent management.
