Hazards of Container Houses

Admin September 15, 2026

Container houses pose multiple hazards, mainly including fire safety risks, illegal construction issues, and damage to the village appearance.

  1. Fire Safety Risks

    • Poor Fire Resistance: Container houses are mostly supported by steel structures. In a fire, the temperature in the fire scene can reach 800-1000℃, exceeding the critical temperature (500℃) at which steel structures lose stability, which can easily lead to the overall collapse of the building. Ordinary container houses may lose their load-bearing capacity within about 10 minutes after a fire, hindering personnel evacuation and material rescue.
    • Flammable Materials: Some containers use flammable materials such as polyurethane and polystyrene to fill the panel cores. These materials have low ignition points and poor flame retardancy. They will burn rapidly when exposed to high temperatures or open flames, and the honeycomb structure exacerbates the spread of the fire.
    • Electrical Circuit Hazards: Phenomena such as unauthorized wiring, mixed use of high-power electrical appliances, and the use of bottled gas indoors are common, posing prominent risks of electric shock and fire. For example, in 2020, a fire in a container-modified house in Langfang City was caused by an electrical circuit fault that ignited weeds.
    • Narrow Evacuation Routes: To pursue usable area, some containers are built occupying safe evacuation routes. In a fire, personnel evacuation is obstructed, with serious consequences.
  2. Illegal Construction Issues

    • Occupation of Public Resources: Some containers illegally occupy collective land or rural roads, blocking fire exits, which is an illegal construction behavior.
    • Triggering Neighbor Disputes: Illegal construction behaviors frequently trigger complaints from the public, disrupting community harmony. For example, in the special rectification campaign in Danbei Town, Danyang City, illegal containers were listed as key rectification targets in the fire safety "100-Day Campaign".
  3. Damage to the Village Appearance

    • Shabby Appearance: Containers are randomly stacked and have an old appearance, which is out of harmony with the overall rural environment and affects the construction of a beautiful village.
    • High Governance Costs: The cleanup of illegal containers requires a large amount of manpower and material resources, increasing the burden on grassroots governance.
