Container House Foundation Drainage Diagram

Admin September 15, 2026

The drainage of the foundation of a container house should be designed in combination with the type of the house. Common drainage methods include gravity and siphon types, and the foundation treatment requires leveling and proper drainage slopes or ditches.

I. Foundation Requirements for Container Houses

The foundation requirements for container houses vary depending on their types:

  • Foldable container houses and fixed residential container houses: These have relatively low foundation requirements. They can be directly placed on a level ground for use. If conditions permit, a cement floor can be poured and drainage ditches can be set up to enhance living comfort.
  • Packing-box container houses: These have simple foundation requirements. They can use strip or pier foundations, or even be placed directly on the ground without a dedicated foundation.
  • Residential prefabricated temporary buildings: These have relatively high foundation requirements. A concrete foundation needs to be poured, and the house should be fixed to the foundation with expansion screws. During demolition, the first-floor concrete foundation usually cannot be reused.

II. Drainage System Design

The drainage system of a container house can refer to the drainage methods of traditional buildings and be optimized according to the characteristics of container houses:

  • Gravity roof drainage system: Rainwater is collected through gutters and then discharged by gravity through rainwater hoppers and downspouts. The pipelines of this system need to be kept in a non-full state. During design, the flow rate should be controlled within the gravity flow range to avoid damage to the downspouts or overflow from indoor inspection wells due to excessive flow.
  • Roof siphon rainwater drainage system: This system utilizes the height difference between the roof and the ground to generate energy. When the accumulated water reaches a certain height, a full-pipe flow (siphon state) is formed in the pipeline, and rapid drainage is achieved through negative pressure suction. This system consists of rainwater hoppers, suspended pipes, downspouts, and drainage pipes, and is suitable for scenarios requiring efficient drainage.

III. Recommendations for Foundation Drainage Treatment

  • Ground leveling and slope: Regardless of the type of container house used, the foundation should be level, and an appropriate drainage slope (usually not less than 1%) should be set up to ensure that rainwater naturally flows into the drainage system.
  • Drainage ditches or concealed pipes: Set up drainage ditches or bury concealed pipes around the container house to guide rainwater to the municipal drainage system or a collection well, preventing the accumulation of water from affecting the foundation.
