Foreign Renovation of Container Houses

Admin September 16, 2026

Foreign countries have diverse renovation methods for container houses, covering residential, hotel, office building, and other types, achieving a balance between functionality and aesthetics through innovative design.

In terms of residential renovation, foreign countries emphasize space utilization and personalized design. For example, a British couple transformed a container into a 15㎡ mini home, adopting a transformable open design and customizing a foldable bed that serves as a sofa during the day and a double bed at night, maximizing the use of limited space. A Danish man built a family-style residence using nine containers, laying decorations and designing large windows to introduce natural light while retaining the corrugated metal interior walls of the containers, creating a unique industrial style. New Zealand's '8-star container house' is made up of two old containers, with compact but fully functional interior space including a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, office, and guest room, enhancing space utilization through hidden storage cabinets and foldable beds.

Hotel and public facility renovations emphasize environmental protection and adaptability. The container hotel in the Czech Republic consists of three containers, using glass walls to enhance transparency, equipped with built-in water tanks and waterless toilets for environmental self-sufficiency; the roof awning is made of waste wooden boards, further reflecting sustainable concepts. The eco-lodge in South Africa is located on a coastal rock outcrop, blending containers with the natural landscape to provide secluded beauty. Ccasa Hostel in Nha Trang, Vietnam, uses containers to create colorful guest rooms equipped with shared kitchens, lobbies, and rooftop terraces,深受旅客喜爱 (which means 'highly popular among travelers').

Office and multifunctional building renovations focus on rapid deployment and flexibility. Bard Media Lab quickly built a teaching space using four containers, with an installation time of only half a day, alleviating pressure on the education system. Italy's CURA project transformed containers into ICU wards with extremely fast installation speeds to respond to public health crises. In addition, containers have been renovated into gyms, office buildings, etc., meeting diverse needs.

Key renovation technologies include structural reinforcement, insulation treatment, and system integration. When opening doors and windows, wood or steel bars are used for reinforcement to avoid damaging the container structure; spray foam plastic or wool insulation materials are used for insulation to adapt to different climates; water and electricity pipelines, bathroom equipment, and solar panels are integrated to enhance living comfort. These renovation cases demonstrate that container houses can achieve low-cost, environmentally friendly, and highly flexible architectural goals through innovative design.
