Foreign Couples Choosing Container Houses

Admin September 15, 2026

There are cases where foreign couples choose container houses as their living option, such as the American couple Grateful Off-Grid and the Belgian couple Glenda and Joris. Details are as follows:

American Couple Grateful Off-Grid

  • Purchase Source and Price: This American couple purchased a 40-foot expandable container home manufactured in China on Alibaba.com. The ex-factory price of the bare house was only $15,800, close to the $20,000 range. After adding all costs including ocean freight, customs duties, inland transportation, and hoisting, the total landed cost was approximately $28,689, equivalent to just over 200,000 RMB.
  • House Features: The house is transported in standard container dimensions and can unfold like a Transformer once it arrives at an empty lot. It has a practical area of about 70 square meters, with a bedroom, independent kitchen and bathroom, and hard装修 (hard decoration) fittings all pre-installed. It can be occupied once water and electricity are connected.
  • Purchase Reason: Compared to the cost of building a house locally in the United States, where constructing a single-family home costs about $165 per square foot, the labor cost alone for a house of the same size would be $200,000, with an overall construction period of six months to a year. In contrast, the comprehensive cost of a Chinese prefabricated house is only one-third to half of that of local construction in the United States, and this significant price difference attracted them to place the order.

Belgian Couple Glenda and Joris

  • Purchase Reason: In November 2024, they sold their old house and bought an old house that needed complete renovation. Renovation takes time, and their two children cannot live on the construction site. It is not practical to carry two mortgages at the same time, and renting is expensive, so they decided to buy a shipping container and transform it into a temporary home.
  • Renovation Situation: They completely did it themselves, turning the container into a truly livable mini home with a kitchen, bathroom, a small living room, and a bedroom where the whole family sleps together. The total budget was less than 10,000 euros.
  • Living Experience: They thought that 'living too cramped' would be the biggest challenge, but what really gave them a headache was the electricity bill. The container is made of metal, which is cold in winter and hot in summer. To regulate the temperature, the electricity bill soared from 250 euros a year originally to 2,100 euros a year. However, even so, they still insist on living there because compared to renting, this expense is still the most controllable and cost-effective option.
