Raising Pigeons in Container Houses

Admin September 15, 2026

Raising pigeons in container houses requires careful planning to avoid disturbing residents and ensure compliance with hygiene and safety requirements.

I. Site Selection and Construction Requirements

  1. Away from Residential Areas: When raising pigeons in container houses, choose a location that is far from residential areas, well-ventilated, and has good drainage to prevent noise, feathers, and feces from affecting surrounding residents. For example, in rural areas, empty houses or renovated pigsties can be selected, while in cities, strict compliance with regulations such as the "Shanghai Municipal Appearance and Environmental Sanitation Management Regulations" is required. Raising poultry and livestock is not allowed outside rural areas unless for special purposes such as teaching or research.
  2. Structural Stability: Use stable materials such as angle steel and wire mesh to build the pigeon coop, ensuring the structural integrity of the container house to prevent pigeons from escaping or intrusion by external animals. Install perches, feeding troughs, and water troughs inside, and ensure proper ventilation and drainage to avoid bacterial growth in humid environments.

II. Hygiene and Disease Prevention and Control

  1. Regular Cleaning: The pigeon coop should be cleaned of feces every two days to reduce the growth of harmful microorganisms. Accumulated feces can release harmful gases such as ammonia, causing respiratory diseases in pigeons and polluting the surrounding environment.
  2. Rodent and Insect Control: Seal all gaps in the container house to prevent rats and weasels from entering. Use wooden pigeon nests or breathable plastic buckets (with drainage holes at the bottom) instead of non-breathable materials such as iron buckets or old safety helmets to prevent pigeon chicks from getting sick due to heat or humidity.

III. Compliance and Neighbor Relations

  1. Compliance with Regulations: Raising pigeons in cities requires legal qualifications such as a pigeon association membership certificate, but "having a license to raise pigeons" is not a shield against disturbing residents. If the pigeon coop causes noise, odor, or feather pollution, it may face complaints or forced removal. For example, a resident in Shanghai was required to make rectifications to avoid the risk of water supply contamination due to the pigeon coop being only a few meters away from the domestic water tank.
  2. Reducing Disturbance: Adopt a timed feeding and release system to prevent pigeons from cooing early in the morning or late at night and disturbing neighbors' rest. Design the pigeon coop windows for cross-ventilation to reduce the spread of dust and odor.

IV. Daily Management Points

  1. Control Breeding Density: Determine the number of pigeons based on the area of the container house to avoid overcrowding, which can lead to pigeon fights or disease transmission. For example, the area of a rooftop pigeon coop should be large enough to cultivate the pigeons' homing instincts.
  2. Isolate Sick Pigeons: Immediately isolate and treat sick pigeons upon discovery to prevent the spread of the epidemic. Regularly check the health status of pigeons to ensure a clean breeding environment.
