Container House Field Hospital

Admin September 16, 2026

Container houses offer significant advantages in the construction of field hospitals and can serve as an effective solution to alleviate the pressure on hospital beds.

I. Modular Design, Flexible and Efficient Construction Container houses adopt a modular architecture, allowing for flexible combination and expansion according to needs. A single standard folding container house covers an area of approximately 18 square meters and can accommodate 4 hospital beds. Through rapid assembly, large-scale bed supply can be achieved. For example, 1,000 container houses can be assembled in a short period, providing 4,000 beds, and can be stacked up to 2 floors, significantly reducing land occupancy. This design meets both short-term emergency needs (such as temporary supplementation for 1-2 months) and can serve as a long-term fixed supporting space (with a service life of 10-15 years). The disassembly process is simple and efficient, and materials can be recycled and reused, balancing practicality and environmental protection.

II. Low Cost, Short Construction Period Compared to traditional buildings, the construction cost of container houses is significantly lower, and the construction period is greatly shortened. Taking the Wuhan Huoshenshan and Leishenshan Hospitals as examples, thousands of container-style houses were quickly built and put into use in a short period, efficiently providing a large number of treatment beds. This characteristic of low cost and rapid capacity expansion can effectively reduce the financial and time pressure on hospitals when expanding or adding space, making it particularly suitable for emergency scenarios with limited resources or the flexible expansion needs of conventional hospitals.

III. Modular Functionality, Adaptable to Diverse Needs Container houses offer a wide range of sizes and functional options, allowing them to meet the diverse needs of hospitals through modular combinations. In addition to standard wards, they can also be transformed into specialized medical spaces such as treatment rooms and observation rooms. For example, the Sanya Field Hospital project utilized 132 containers to form a medical staff office and living area, along with a supporting steel-structure catering kitchen, fully adapting to the functional needs of the medical setting.

IV. Strong Environmental Adaptability, Mobile Deployment Container houses have excellent waterproof, windproof, and earthquake-resistant properties, and are easy to install and transport. Their open ward design improves nursing efficiency and is suitable for rapid deployment in various geographical environments. For example, the Shanghai Lingang Yangshan Special Protection Zone Field Hospital, under complex site conditions, quickly completed the construction of nearly a thousand containers through innovative foundation construction solutions (such as the combination of I-beams and masonry), meeting the needs of treating over 10,000 people.
