Container House Design Blueprint
Admin September 16, 2026
When transforming containers into houses, you can refer to the following design ideas and key points:

Overall Layout and Structure
- Spatial Combination: You can adopt a staggered stacking method. For example, in the Melbourne case, the direct stacking of the upper and lower layers was changed to a staggered stacking of three containers, making the living space more spacious and bright and creating additional recreational areas. You can also combine containers side by side. For instance, two 18㎡ containers can be placed side by side with a small aisle in the middle for easy passage, and different functional areas can be divided accordingly.
- Modular Design: Drawing on the practices of the "Sustainable Living Lab", each container body serves as a standard spatial unit with different functions. By combining them in different ways, versatile functional spaces can be formed to meet diverse needs.
Appearance and Lighting
- Use of Glass Walls: High-strength glass walls can be installed at the front and back of the containers, as in the Melbourne case. This allows sunlight to easily penetrate all parts of the interior, making the space bright and transparent and bringing it closer to nature.
- Roof Design: You can refer to the 15㎡ container home in the forest. The four corners of the roof are connected by lifting rods to ensure sufficient light and ventilation. Solar panels can also be installed to solve the electricity problem.
Internal Functional Areas
- Living Room: Keep it simple. You can place a gray fabric sofa, a mini wooden coffee table, etc., and match it with a round off-white carpet to add a sense of layering.
- Kitchen: An open-plan design is often used to save space. For example, in a linear kitchen, cabinets and open shelves can be installed on the upper, lower, left, and right sides to facilitate the storage of kitchen utensils and tableware.
- Bedroom: The bed can be custom-made to be foldable. During the day, it can serve as a sofa, and at night, it can be transformed into a double bed. The walls can be filled with cabinets to increase storage space.
- Bathroom: Plan the space reasonably and install necessary sanitary facilities.
- Recreational Area: Transform the gaps between containers into aisles to divide the space without making it feel cramped. Or set up a recreational area around them with round stone tables and long stone benches, etc.
Decoration Style and Materials
- Style: A minimalist style can be adopted, with white and gray as the main colors, paired with natural wood tones, to create a clean, tidy, warm, and comfortable atmosphere.
- Materials: For the interior, cost-effective artificial boards can be selected as the main materials, with thermal insulation materials added. They are less likely to crack or deform and are easy to repair and replace. For the exterior, a combination of quartz, porcelain, and glass can be used, which has high hardness and good thermal insulation properties.
