Container House Construction Methods

Admin September 14, 2026

The construction of container houses requires a combination of design, construction, and maintenance, with core steps including foundation preparation, container modification, modular installation, and post-construction maintenance.

I. Foundation Preparation and Approval

  1. Site Selection and Approval
Necessary procedures must be followed based on land type: For rural homesteads, structural drawings must be submitted and construction approval applied for; for leased land, only temporary structures are allowed, and the contract must specify the nature of use. Construction on cultivated land and basic farmland is strictly prohibited, and approval from forestry authorities is required for forest land.
  2. Foundation Construction
Ground screws or concrete-embedded steel structures are used as foundations, with bases fixed by bolts to ensure moisture and pest resistance. For example, large warehouse-style houses require the construction of a concrete or steel foundation first, followed by the installation of columns and beams.

II. Container Modification and Functional Design

  1. Spatial Combination
Functional areas are expanded through horizontal splicing, vertical stacking, or split-level design. For example, 2-3 containers can be combined to form a single-story residence (approximately 100㎡) with a living room, bedroom, and bathroom; split-level stacking can create a leisure courtyard, improving ventilation and lighting.
  2. Lighting and Insulation
    • Lighting: Large floor-to-ceiling windows, roof skylights, or glass partitions are installed to enhance indoor brightness.
    • Insulation: Inner insulation layers are added to walls/roofs, and triple-glazed windows are selected for better thermal insulation than red brick walls; roof eaves or sunshades are installed to prevent overheating in summer.
  3. Personalized Exterior
The exterior can be painted, themed with murals, or fitted with glass curtain walls to shed the industrial look. For example, a container guesthouse in Zaozhuang, Shandong, features themed paintings to create a unique landscape.

III. Modular Installation and Construction Points

  1. Modular Installation
Steel structural components and container units are prefabricated in the factory, transported to the site, and connected by bolts to columns and beams. Slide rail components are built layer by layer and positioned. For example, a three-story office building used 96 containers, with container fabrication completed in 6 days and on-site assembly in 5 days.
  2. Structural Optimization
Lightweight design is adopted to reduce steel costs, such as using 6mm steel plate bending instead of heavy square tubes; container welding combinations simplify facades and enhance structural stability.

IV. Post-Construction Maintenance and Rust Prevention

  1. Rust Prevention and Corrosion Resistance
Cut and welded edges must be sanded and painted with epoxy primer + topcoat; welds, corners, and other areas should be inspected annually, and rust spots should be repainted immediately upon discovery.
  2. Waterproof Sealing
Sealing strips at container joints should be inspected regularly to prevent rainwater leakage and internal condensation.
