Comprehensive Illustrated Guide to Container Houses

Admin September 16, 2026

The design and application of container houses are diverse and innovative. Here are some design points and practical cases of container houses:

Design Points

  • Modular Design: Container houses typically adopt a modular design approach, with each container serving as a standard spatial unit that performs different functions. Through various combination patterns, they can form versatile functional spaces to meet diverse living needs.
  • Spatial Adaptability: The net space of standard-sized containers is relatively limited, so adaptive combination designs of containers are often required during renovation. By combining containers, a wider variety of architectural forms can be created, and unique artistic qualities specific to container architecture can be achieved.
  • Green and Environmentally Friendly: As a green modular building form, container houses are recyclable. Their design is diverse and unrestricted, with a wide range of applications, visible both in urban areas and deep in the forests.

Practical Cases

  • Mini Home Deep in the Forest: A foreign couple purchased an oversized container in the suburbs and transformed it into a 15-square-meter mini home. The house features a deformable open design, exuding luxury and a strong sense of design. The roof has been upgraded with solar panels to solve the electricity problem.
  • Container Villa Residence: Composed of four 30-square-meter high containers, with a total area of 120 square meters. The ground floor of the residence includes functional areas such as a living room, kitchen, and bathroom, while the second floor contains guest rooms, a studio, and other spaces. The four containers are interwoven, creating staggered terraces and double-height living and dining areas.
  • Sustainable Living Lab: Co-created by the Tsinghua University Art and Science Research Center and others, this modular residence is constructed using six containers, featuring a well-planned layout and staggered spaces. The residence applies green, healthy, and low-carbon living concepts to real-life scenarios, inspiring more people to pay attention to sustainable living.
