Container House Box Sizes
Admin September 15, 2026
The common sizes of container houses are mainly divided into two categories: standard sizes and non-standard customized sizes.

Standard-sized Container Houses
Internationally, standard container houses are primarily available in 20-foot and 40-foot sizes, with the following specifications:
- 20-foot Standard Container (20GP): External dimensions are 6058×2438×2591 mm, with an internal usable size of 5867×2330×2350 mm and a volume of approximately 30 cubic meters. Common uses include single-person offices, dormitories, or shops.
- 40-foot Standard Container (40GP): External dimensions are 12192×2438×2591 mm, with an internal usable size of 11998×2330×2350 mm and a volume of approximately 65 cubic meters. Suitable for dividing into multi-functional spaces or multi-person dormitories.
- 40-foot High Cube Container (40HQ): The external height is increased to 2896 mm, with an internal height of 2655 mm and a volume of approximately 75 cubic meters. Often used for exhibition halls or housing that requires higher ceilings.
Additionally, there are special sizes such as 45-foot high cubes and 20-foot open-top containers, but their applications are less common.
Non-standard Customized-sized Container Houses
According to actual needs, the sizes of container houses can be flexibly adjusted:
- Common Non-standard Sizes: Such as 3m (length) × 3m (width) × 2.8m (height) (area of 9 square meters), 6m × 3m × 2.8m (area of 18 square meters), and 7m × 3m × 2.8m (area of 21 square meters). Among them, the 6m × 3m × 2.8m size is most commonly used in construction sites and road construction.
- Customized Design: Length, width, and height can all be adjusted as needed. For example, widths can be 2.5m, 3m, or 4m, and heights can range from 2.6m to 2.9m. Some projects also expand space through modular combinations (such as stacking vertically or horizontally) or even design them as double-wing expandable containers, which can provide an indoor area of up to 36 square meters when expanded.
Special Types of Container Houses
- Foldable Container Houses: Usually designed based on 20-foot or 40-foot international standards, facilitating transportation and quick installation. Sizes can also be customized according to site conditions.
- Packing-box Container Houses: Internal dimensions are 5880×2840×2500 mm, featuring galvanized steel structures and sandwich panel walls, suitable for temporary housing or office scenarios.
