What to Do If a Container House Turns Black
Admin September 17, 2026
The blackening of a container house needs to be addressed based on the specific cause. Common causes include mold growth and metal rusting. Here are targeted solutions:

If Blackening Is Due to Mold Growth
Clean the Surface
- Wipe with bleach, disinfecting alcohol, or a specialized mold cleaner. For stubborn mold spots, spray with a mold remover, let it sit for 3-5 minutes, and then gently wipe in one direction with a damp towel to avoid damaging the wall.
- Alternatively, prepare a solution by diluting bleach or mixing white vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio, or use a laundry detergent solution to spray on the blackened areas, let it sit, and then scrub. 84 disinfectant can be used for temporary bleaching, but multiple applications are needed to fade the marks.
Identify and Resolve the Source of Moisture
- Check the roof for leaks. If there is seepage, repair it immediately; otherwise, the problem will recur after cleaning.
Improve Ventilation and Control Humidity
- Use a dehumidifier to reduce indoor humidity and keep the air dry.
- Open windows for ventilation in the afternoon or evening when humidity is lower, and close south-facing windows and doors on rainy days to reduce moisture entry.
- Install exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to accelerate air circulation and place quicklime to absorb moisture.
Treat Severely Blackened Areas
- Remove the damaged parts, repair with caulk or plaster, and apply mold-resistant paint or anti-seepage solution.
- For long-term mold prevention, choose waterproof interior wall paint. Ensure the wall is completely dry before application. If mold has penetrated deeply, remove the severely moldy wall covering, redo the waterproof layer, and apply mold-resistant paint.
- Use an alkali-resistant primer during repairs to prevent chalking and avoid color differences.
Handle Special Cases
- If the mold covers a large area or the roof structure is damaged, replace part of the ceiling material.
- If self-treatment is ineffective, contact a professional team to inspect the root cause and carry out the work.
If Blackening Is Due to Metal Rusting
Clean the Surface
- Remove rust with a wire brush or sandpaper, eliminating surface dirt and oxide scale to fully expose the rust layer.
Pretreat
- Apply a chemical rust remover such as phosphoric acid rust remover. After the rust layer softens, clean it with a brush or sandpaper.
Apply Protective Coatings
- After removing the rust, apply a rust-resistant primer to enhance the protective capacity of the metal surface.
- Apply weather-resistant paint or anti-corrosion coating to form a protective layer and prevent further rusting.
Maintenance
- Regularly inspect the container house and promptly treat minor rust spots to prevent rust spread.
Operation Precautions: When dealing with mold or rust, wear protective gear (such as gloves and goggles) to avoid chemical contact with the skin or eyes. Maintain good ventilation to reduce inhalation of harmful gases.
