Container House Baike

Admin September 17, 2026

A container house is a type of building that uses containers as the basic structural modules and is transformed for habitation or office use. It is also known as a container room, container mobile home, container residence, or inhabitable container.

Origin and Development

The concept of container houses can be traced back to the modification practices after container standardization in the mid-20th century. Early on, Container City I in London, UK (2000) promoted its social recognition, and in 2013, Brighton, UK, adopted it as a solution to the housing crisis. The development of container houses in China began with the modification of idle containers at coastal ports in the late 20th century. In 2013, the 'Green Building Action Plan' recognized it as an important form of prefabricated buildings, and in recent years, it has met global demand under the 'Belt and Road' initiative. In 1987, Phillip C. Clark proposed a modification patent. In 2006, an American architect designed the first double-story container residence certified by the state. In 2008, CIMC built a container school in Wenchuan after the earthquake that could accommodate a thousand people. In 2010, China initiated the compilation of relevant technical regulations, and in 2012, CIMC created the world's first recyclable container hotel.

Structure and Characteristics

It adopts a steel frame structure and bolt connections, and is constructed by combining standardized container units, belonging to modular building products. Easy transportation and installation: It can be quickly assembled, requires no foundation, has a compressible transportation volume, and offers high disassembly and assembly efficiency with reusability. Sturdy and durable: It is earthquake-resistant, deformation-resistant, wind-resistant, has strong load-bearing capacity, is corrosion-resistant, and has a service life of over 20 years. Sealed, soundproof, and heat-insulated: It has good water tightness and excellent soundproofing and heat insulation properties in the walls. Flexible space combination: It can derive various combined spaces, can be stacked, usually up to 3 stories, and modular rooms can be stacked up to 7 high. Appearance and cost advantages: It has diverse shapes, a bright appearance, and a low cost.

Application Scenarios and Technological Optimization

In the temporary housing sector, it is commonly seen in construction site dormitories and rental housing, playing an important role in emergency resettlement, such as the container school after the Wenchuan earthquake. In the creative and commercial sectors, there are innovative applications such as characteristic homestay scenic spots and 24-hour self-service fitness pods. In other sectors, it is used for temporary office spaces, homestays in tourist attractions, smart waste stations, and the construction of emergency medical facilities, such as the use of container houses to form the Asian Games Village for the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games in Japan. There are continuous technological optimizations and research in terms of thermal insulation performance, energy supply systems, and intelligent management.
