Container Cold Storage Transformed into House

Admin September 15, 2026

Container cold storage can be transformed into a house, but issues such as structure, insulation, and utilities need to be addressed, and it must comply with building codes.

  1. Structural Reinforcement and Corrosion Protection
Originally designed for cargo transportation, container bottom frames have large longitudinal beam spacing, leading to insufficient floor stiffness when used directly as living spaces. During renovation, C-shaped steel purlins should be installed between the bottom beams to evenly distribute loads to the main beams, ensuring structural stability even when stacked up to three floors. Additionally, the container surface should undergo shot blasting for rust removal and be coated with zinc-rich primer and polyurethane topcoat to withstand the sandy and temperature-varying environment of northwest China, extending its service life to over 15 years.

  2. Thermal Insulation Performance Optimization
The thermal bridge effect of metal container walls is a key challenge in renovation. Conventional interior insulation board attachment can easily form heat conduction channels at steel frames, necessitating the use of a thermal break lining structure: filling rigid polyurethane foam between steel frames and interior wall panels, and adding rubber thermal insulation pads at frame connections to reduce heat exchange efficiency by about 40%. For example, camp dormitory projects using this method can maintain indoor temperatures 8-10 degrees Celsius higher than the outside in winter, reducing heating energy consumption.

  3. Water and Electricity System Integration and Environmental Design
Renovation requires integrating water and electricity systems, including the laying of wires, lights, and air conditioning pipes. For wilderness camps without water and electricity, a self-circulating sewage system can be installed: a sewage collection tank and gravity separator are set at the bottom of the container to treat gray water (from bathing and washing) through sedimentation and activated carbon filtration for vegetation irrigation; black water (from toilets) is converted into liquid fertilizer through anaerobic fermentation with microbial agents, achieving resource recycling.

  4. Modular and Mobile Advantages
The core value of container houses lies in the full lifecycle recycling of materials. Their disassembly and assembly loss rate is controlled within 5%, allowing them to be hoisted as a whole to new sites, significantly reducing construction waste. For example, refrigerated container houses provided by Qingdao Leiyue Heavy Industry have a service life of over 20 years, can be moved as needed, have low foundation requirements, and offer significant economic benefits.

  5. Compliance and Safety
Renovation must comply with local building codes, including fire and earthquake resistance requirements. For example, Baotou Xinxing Color Plate Steel Structure Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has optimized the corrosion protection and load-bearing design of steel structures, enabling container houses to have earthquake, wind, and fire resistance, ensuring living safety.
