Container-Assembled House
Admin September 15, 2026
Container-assembled houses, also known as modular houses, are a form of construction where the entire house is divided into independent modules, prefabricated in a factory, and then transported to the site for assembly. The following provides an introduction from multiple aspects:

Construction Method
- Factory Prefabrication: The entire house is divided into several independent 'room modules'. These modules are manufactured on factory assembly lines, including most construction processes such as the main structure, plumbing and electrical systems, bathroom waterproofing, bathroom fixtures, cabinets, and wardrobes. Even interior soft furnishings can be integrated into each module. For example, a structural modular smart factory in Guangdong disassembles a house into six components—the bottom, top, and four sides—and produces them simultaneously on multiple sub-assembly lines, finally assembling them into a complete box at the end of the production line.
- On-site Assembly: After the modules arrive at the site, they are combined with supporting steel structure roof trusses and other components to form the overall shape. Only plumbing and electrical connections are needed on-site, allowing for 'move-in ready' occupancy. For instance, a modular elderly care apartment manufactured in China and purchased by a British merchant was shipped from the Chinese factory, arrived at a British port, and completed on-site hoisting and construction in just two weeks.
Advantages and Characteristics
- Short Construction Period: The construction period is reduced by more than half compared to traditional methods. For example, in the MRDC modular hotel project by China Construction Science and Industry Corporation in Papua New Guinea, the traditional construction delivery period would take 14 to 18 months, while the modular solution took only about 7 months.
- Reusable and Relocatable: Construction waste, dust, and noise pollution are significantly reduced. Under standardized use and regular maintenance, the average number of disassembly and reuse times for top-tier compliant products can reach more than 8 times, reducing construction waste emissions by about 90% compared to traditional fixed temporary buildings.
- Quality Assurance: The main structure consists of a steel frame paired with flame-retardant rock wool sandwich panels, integrating insulation, fire resistance, sound insulation, and waterproofing. For example, the packing boxes produced by Suzhou Zhongnan Steel Structure Co., Ltd. use a full steel structure frame and have been tested to withstand wind speeds of up to 12 and earthquakes of magnitude 8.
Application Scenarios
- It has become a core solution for temporary office spaces, accommodations, event support, and other scenarios, and can also be adapted to diverse scenarios such as engineering camps, mobile commerce, cultural and tourism accommodations, and emergency support.
