Construction Container House Design Drawings
Admin September 17, 2026
Design drawings for constructing container houses can be planned and designed with reference to the following different cases:

I. Family Residential Designs
- Case of a Four-Person Family in a Jiangsu Town: This house is built on the original foundation, utilizing a single-story container structure with a focus on enhancing thermal insulation. The interior space is divided into functional areas such as living room, bedrooms, and kitchen through partitions, and is equipped with an air conditioning system. The core of the design lies in leveraging the modular characteristics of containers for rapid construction, while addressing the issue of heat conduction in metal structures through insulation layers and air conditioning, making it suitable for regions with significant temperature variations.
- Single-Story Mansion in San José, Costa Rica: Composed of two 40-foot containers joined horizontally, with a total area of 100 square meters. Design highlights include:
- Spatial Transparency: The living room, dining room, and kitchen adopt an open layout, complemented by large-scale floor-to-ceiling windows to enhance natural lighting;
- Functional Completeness: Features two bedrooms, a bathroom with a bathtub, and a skylight on the roof to meet family living needs;
- Energy-Saving System: The walls, roof, and floor are all lined with internal insulation, and solar photovoltaic panels are installed on the roof to achieve energy self-sufficiency;
- Natural Integration: Natural light is introduced through skylights, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
II. Public Building Designs
- Distill Studio Office Building in the United States: Formed by stacking 32 containers, creating 12 offices and a cantilevered conference room. Design characteristics include:
- Modular Expansion: Flexible space division achieved through the standard dimensions of containers;
- High-Performance Insulation: Utilizes a double-wall structure filled with insulation material, coupled with an energy-efficient climate control system to reduce energy consumption;
- Visual Vitality: The exterior is painted with colorful coatings, breaking the monotony of traditional industrial buildings.
- “Periscope Project” in San Diego: Five containers are arranged linearly, defining an outdoor courtyard and a second-floor platform. Design strategies include:
- Circulation Organization: Divides public and private areas through a parallel layout;
- Spatial Permeability: Exposed areas serve as auxiliary activity spaces, enhancing interaction between the building and its environment.
III. Refined Design of Partial Spaces Drawing on cases from institutions such as Huaniandai Design Firm, specific areas of container houses can be optimized:
- Study/Bedroom: Utilizes built-in furniture to save space, combined with skylights or side windows to introduce natural light;
- Kitchen Island: Leverages the length advantage of containers to design a straight or L-shaped countertop, integrating appliances and storage functions;
- Balcony Garden: Extends planting areas from the top or sides of containers, paired with a vertical greening system to enhance ecological benefits.
Summary of Key Design Points: It is necessary to determine the number and combination method of containers based on usage needs, prioritize solving basic issues such as thermal insulation, lighting, and ventilation, and then enhance comfort through spatial division and decoration.
