Common Lengths of Prefabricated House Piles
The common lengths of prefabricated house piles typically range from 8 to 12 meters, with the specific choice depending on site conditions, construction methods, and pile types. The length design is influenced by the following factors:

1. Limitations on Length Due to Prefabrication Methods
On-site prefabricated piles are subject to transportation and construction equipment limitations, with single-section lengths generally not exceeding 30 meters. If hammering or static pressure pile driving methods are used, overly long piles are prone to breakage during construction, and on-site pile splicing operations are complex, increasing construction risks. Factory-prefabricated piles, which require standardized transportation, are typically controlled to lengths within 12 meters to ensure structural stability during transportation. For example, the factory production specifications for prestressed high-strength concrete pipe piles (PHC piles) are mostly 8 to 12 meters, facilitating mass production and on-site splicing.
2. Adaptability of Pile Length to Geological Conditions
In soft soil foundations, pile lengths need to penetrate the weak layer to reach the bearing layer. If the soft soil layer is 10 meters thick, piles of 10 to 12 meters are required; if the bearing layer is shallow (e.g., 5 to 8 meters), 8-meter piles may suffice. In hard soil or rock layers, pile lengths may be shortened to below 8 meters, but static load tests are necessary to verify the bearing capacity of single piles. For example, in coastal areas with silty soft soils, 10 to 12-meter piles are commonly used to ensure the pile tip enters sand or clay layers; whereas in mountainous areas with exposed bedrock, pile lengths may only need to be 6 to 8 meters.
3. Requirements for Pile Length Based on Construction Methods
When hammering piles, overly long piles can easily cause the pile body to bend or the joints to loosen, so single-section pile lengths are generally not more than 12 meters. Static pressure pile driving can achieve longer pile bodies through segmented pressing, but each segment length should be controlled within 12 meters to avoid insufficient pile driving force. Vibratory pile driving is suitable for short piles (usually ≤8 meters), as overly long piles can easily cause soil liquefaction due to vibration, affecting pile driving accuracy.
4. Standardized Selection of Pile Types and Specifications
Among common prefabricated pile types, square piles typically have cross-sectional dimensions of 200 to 500 millimeters, with lengths mainly ranging from 8 to 12 meters; pipe piles have outer diameters of 300 to 800 millimeters, with length specifications including 8, 10, and 12 meters, among others. During design, pile lengths should be selected based on load requirements. For example, multi-story residential foundations may use 10-meter piles, while high-rise buildings require 12-meter piles combined with pile caps to meet bearing capacity demands.
