Collapse Risk of Single-Story Prefabricated Panel Houses
Single-story prefabricated panel houses are at risk of collapse, with their safety influenced by multiple factors, and there have been historical cases of such collapses.

Load Factors
Exceeding the load-bearing capacity of prefabricated panels is a significant cause of collapse. Taking the house accident in Fengshou Community, Guanba Town, Zhong County, Chongqing on April 11, 2024, as an example, the temporary accumulation of excessive loads on the second-floor slab exceeded the load-bearing capacity of the prefabricated panels, leading to brittle fracture and dropping of the slab, ultimately resulting in a serious consequence of 2 deaths and 3 injuries. Prefabricated panels are designed with specific load-bearing standards. When the actual weight they bear, such as the accumulation of heavy objects or excessive concentration of people, exceeds their designed load-bearing capacity, structural damage may occur, leading to house collapse.
Structural and Foundation Factors
The overall structure of the house and the condition of the foundation play a crucial role in the safety of prefabricated panel houses. On May 27, 2024, Building 48 in Longyuan Community, Datong Town, Suburb of Tongling City, Anhui Province collapsed. This house, built in 2001 with a brick-concrete prefabricated panel structure, was preliminarily analyzed by experts to have possibly collapsed due to the foundation being soaked by heavy rainfall. The foundation is the base of a house. If the foundation experiences uneven settlement, insufficient soil bearing capacity, or is damaged by external forces (such as long-term rainwater soaking), it can cause uneven stress distribution in the overall structure of the house, affecting the connection and support between prefabricated panels, thereby increasing the risk of house collapse. In addition, unreasonable overall structural design of the house, such as insecure connections between prefabricated panels and a lack of necessary supporting structures, can also reduce the stability of the house, making it prone to collapse under external forces.
Other Potential Factors
In addition to the above main factors, some other potential factors may also affect the safety of single-story prefabricated panel houses. For example, if a house has been in use for an extended period, building materials such as prefabricated panels will gradually age and corrode, resulting in a decrease in their strength and load-bearing capacity. Quality issues during construction, such as non-standard production and inaccurate installation of prefabricated panels, can also pose hidden dangers to house safety.
