Chongqing Waterless Mobile Toilets

Admin September 22, 2026

Chongqing indeed has practices related to waterless mobile toilets, including mobile toilets along the river and the first intelligent waterless ecological public toilet.

Mobile Toilets Along the River

Mobile toilets with the feature of "hailing on demand" have appeared along the riverside in Chongqing. This design is primarily aimed at facilitating tourists during their riverbank excursions. Their mobility allows them to be flexibly adjusted in position according to tourist needs and distribution, enhancing convenience and coverage. However, whether these mobile toilets are completely waterless remains unclear from publicly available information. It is speculated that they may adopt water-saving designs or be equipped with limited water resources for basic cleaning, but their core features lie in mobility and convenience.

Intelligent Waterless Ecological Public Toilet

Chongqing's first intelligent waterless ecological public toilet opened for trial operation at the Jianchuan Museum, marking an important practice in waterless toilet technology. This public toilet employs source separation technology to completely separate feces and urine, using harmless microbial strains for biological degradation of excreta. No water is needed for flushing after use, saving a significant amount of water resources. Its resource recycling and reuse functions are remarkable: biologically fermented feces can be made into high-quality organic fertilizer or nutrient soil, while collected urine can be processed into liquid composite microbial fertilizer, achieving "turning waste into treasure." Additionally, this public toilet has launched the country's first intelligent management cloud platform utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Toilet users can find toilets with one click on their mobile phones, scan codes to open doors, and receive urine tests and health consultation services, while operators can monitor the toilet's status in real-time, improving management efficiency.

Technical Principles

The waterless ecological toilet employs a microcomputer control system that automatically detects the presence of toilet users through a sensing system, triggering lighting, ventilation, and separation systems. Its core lies in using composite microorganisms to biologically treat solid excreta into gases (such as carbon dioxide and water vapor), while urine is decomposed and treated to meet reclaimed water standards for recycling. This process eliminates the need for traditional flushing, saving water resources and reducing sewage discharge, aligning with ecological and environmental protection concepts.

In summary, Chongqing's practices in waterless mobile toilets demonstrate the integration of technological innovation and environmental protection needs, providing new ideas for the sustainable development of public facilities.
