China's Mobile Toilet Revolution
China's mobile toilet revolution is a systematic project that originated in the tourism industry in 2015 and has gradually expanded to cover the entire country. Through technological innovation, intelligent management, scenario adaptation, and policy promotion, it has significantly improved the level of public sanitation facilities.

I. Technological Innovation: From Temporary Facilities to Intelligent Sanitation Spaces
In terms of materials, the military-grade aluminum alloy frame has a tensile strength of 350 MPa. Combined with anodizing treatment, it can resist salt spray and acid rain corrosion, extending the service life in northern coastal rural areas from 5 years to over 15 years. Structural design utilizes finite element analysis technology, increasing the strength of key nodes by three times, enabling it to withstand a 10-meter drop and a Category 12 typhoon, while reducing self-weight by 30% and saving transportation costs. Regarding environmental adaptability, double-layer vacuum glass and graphene heating films are used in northern cold regions, maintaining a constant cabin temperature of over 15°C at -30°C. In southern humid environments, it meets the IP65 waterproof standard. Customized modules in high-altitude areas maintain an oxygen concentration of over 21% in the cabin at an altitude of 4,500 meters, reducing the incidence of altitude sickness by 60%. The energy system supports dual modes of solar power and diesel generators, with an average daily power generation of 8 kWh in rural areas of northwest China, meeting the demand for 72 hours of off-grid operation.
II. Intelligent Management: Integration of IoT and Biotechnology
The new generation of mobile toilets integrates sensors for temperature, humidity, ammonia concentration, and water level. When ammonia levels exceed the standard, the exhaust fan is automatically activated, and maintenance personnel are alerted when the sewage tank is full, reducing labor input for cleaning cycles by over 30%. Field tests at Danjingshan Scenic Area in Pengzhou, Chengdu, showed that mobile toilets using biodegradable sewage treatment technology had an odor concentration below the national standard of 0.05 mg/m³ after three months of use, achieving zero complaints. Mobile flush toilets break through the limitations of underground pipelines through modular design, with a single flush volume of 1-2 liters, saving over 70% of water. Some models are equipped with rainwater collection and reclaimed water reuse systems, and sealed sewage tanks combined with ultraviolet disinfection technology solve odor and bacterial issues.
III. Policy Promotion: Full Coverage and Typical Demonstrations
In 2019, the State Council held an on-site meeting on the rural "toilet revolution," the National Tourism Administration released the "New Three-Year Action Plan for the Construction and Management of Tourist Toilets Nationwide (2018-2020)," the Ministry of Transport issued the "Special Action Plan for Deepening the 'Toilet Revolution' in Highway Service Areas" in 2021, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and other departments issued the "Typical Examples of the Rural Toilet Revolution" in 2022. As of 2024, the popularity rate of rural sanitary toilets nationwide has exceeded 73%. By May 2026, Anhui Province had cumulatively renovated 4.65 million toilets, with a popularity rate of 91%. In the same year, Guangwu Village, Maoji Town, Tongbai County, Nanyang City, Henan Province, completed the renovation of over 400 dry toilets, basically achieving the elimination of dry toilets in the entire village.
