China Integrated Prefabricated House Panels
China's integrated prefabricated house panels are houses constructed primarily with prefabricated panels, which are factory-made cement components with various types, development histories, existing issues, technological forms, and export advantages.

Definition and Types
Prefabricated panel houses use prefabricated panels as their main components. These panels are manufactured in factories by nailing wooden models, arranging steel bars, and pouring cement. They come in two types: solid and hollow. The hollow structure reduces the non-load-bearing concrete to achieve lightweighting, suitable for different construction needs.
Development History
Prefabricated panel houses originated in the early 20th century and were initially used for floor slabs and roof insulation layers. In China, most residential buildings constructed before 1985 adopted this structure. With advancements in construction technology, cast-in-place concrete and prefabricated buildings gradually replaced traditional prefabricated panel houses. Since 2022, China has implemented renovation policies, focusing on repairing and upgrading prefabricated panel houses while only demolishing those that meet hazardous building standards.
Existing Issues
Existing prefabricated panel houses generally suffer from weak earthquake resistance, poor sound and heat insulation, and have a lifespan of about 30-50 years. Some regions have initiated demolition projects to enhance building safety and living comfort.
Technological Forms
"Prefabricated houses" mainly come in three forms: steel, concrete, and wooden. Chinese companies have comparative advantages in steel and concrete sectors. Steel structures are lightweight and suitable for ocean transportation and high-rise buildings, while concrete structures offer a more traditional living experience and are well-received in the domestic market.
Export Advantages
China's prefabricated building exports have surged from $1.472 billion to approximately $4.339 billion over the past decade, nearly tripling. In the first quarter of 2026, export growth reached 45%, leading all building material categories. For example, a foldable double-wing prefabricated integrated house from Huanggang, Hubei, costs 200,000 RMB at the factory and sells for over a million USD after being refurbished in Spain and Italy. This type of house divides the building into standard modules, with 95% of the work completed in the factory, allowing for on-site assembly in just one day. The 70-square-meter fully furnished unit includes a bedroom, kitchen, and independent bathroom. With housing shortages and labor gaps in the construction industry in Europe and the United States, traditional construction is costly and slow. In contrast, Chinese prefabricated houses cost only 40% of local buildings in Europe and the United States, with basic models available for $30,000 on e-commerce platforms, making them highly popular among overseas consumers.
