China Container Houses

Admin September 10, 2026

China container houses are a form of modular construction with short schedules, low cost, and assured quality and safety, and market prospects are broad.

Building form and features

In China container houses, walls, floors, roofs, utilities, and even bathrooms leave the factory as complete living units that ship to site and assemble like building blocks into schools, hospitals, hotels, and homes. CIMC’s modular building system integrates structure, MEP, finishes, and smart systems; more than 90% of building modules can be prefabricated and finished on the factory line, then hauled by sea and land to the project, crane-erected quickly, and ready for move-in.

Advantages

  • Short schedule: Taking Papua New Guinea’s MRDC modular hotel as an example, traditional full delivery takes 14-18 months, while the modular plan—domestic production, ocean shipping, and on-site assembly combined—needs only about 7 months overall.
  • Low cost: Skilled construction wages in Europe and the US convert to about $27.8-$55.6 per hour, and labor can account for 40% of total project cost. Modular building moves more than 90% of work to domestic factories, cutting on-site standing crews from the traditional 80-120 people to about 45, sharply reducing labor and related hidden costs. Lightweight steel modules also cut foundation and main-structure materials, lowering site material use 60%-70%; factory CNC cutting waste is only 3%-5%, below traditional site waste of 8%-12%.
  • Assured quality and safety: Modular buildings are designed fully to permanent-building codes; sound insulation, waterproofing, fire resistance, seepage control, and seismic design follow permanent standards. China has built a complete standards system from national standards to industry rules; with factory precision and new materials, modular window airtightness and wall sound insulation can even outperform traditional buildings.

Market situation

In Q1 2026, China’s prefabricated building (including modular) export growth reached 45%; Shenzhen port alone exported “portable houses” worth $233,333,333 in the first four months, up 19.6% year on year, shipping to more than 150 countries and regions; first-half “portable house” exports reached $340,277,778, covering more than 160 countries and regions worldwide.
