Chaoshan Container House Design

Admin September 15, 2026

The design of container houses in Chaoshan needs to combine functional requirements, climatic conditions, and regional characteristics, focusing on structural reinforcement, space utilization, thermal insulation, moisture prevention, and personalized decoration. The specific design points are as follows:

1. Basic Structure and Space Planning

Container houses use standard containers (such as 20-foot and 40-foot units) as modules, achieving space expansion through splicing and stacking. Chaoshan is prone to typhoons, so structural stability needs to be enhanced: Use welding or bolts to fix the container connections, and add diagonal braces or cross-ties; use pile foundations or concrete bases at the bottom to elevate the containers for moisture prevention and enhance wind resistance. In terms of space layout, the concept of "modular design" can be borrowed, assigning different functional areas to independent containers (such as bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms) and forming a flexible floor plan through combination. For example, two 40-foot containers spliced horizontally can form a single-story residence of about 100 square meters, including a living room, dining room, two bedrooms, and a separate wet and dry bathroom.

2. Climate Adaptability Design

Chaoshan has a subtropical monsoon climate, with high temperatures and heavy rainfall in summer and cold and damp conditions in winter. Thermal insulation and moisture prevention are crucial:

  1. Walls and roofs: Adopt a "double-layer structure", with an inner layer of rock wool or polyurethane foam board insulation, and an outer layer of metal sheets or waterproof membranes; add slope drainage channels to the roof to prevent water accumulation and leakage.
  2. Door and window systems: Choose broken-bridge aluminum alloy doors and windows, paired with insulating glass (such as triple-glazed units) to improve thermal insulation performance; install adjustable blinds or sunshades on the windows to reduce direct sunlight in summer.
  3. Ventilation design: Open high windows at both ends or sides of the container to form convection air ducts; install exhaust fans in the bathroom and range hoods in the kitchen to quickly expel moisture and odors.

3. Functional Zoning and Detail Optimization

  1. Bathroom: Due to the size limitations of the container, use wooden walls or light steel keel partitions to divide the wet and dry areas; lay waterproof tiles on the floor and use mold-resistant paint on the walls; hanging sinks and wall-mounted toilets save space, with storage cabinets reserved below.
  2. Kitchen: Adopt a linear or L-shaped cabinet, integrating a stove, sink, and work surface; install simple light strips on the top for supplementary lighting, and add hooks and shelves on the walls to store kitchen utensils.
  3. Patio and leisure area: Extend a patio from the roof or one side, lay anti-corrosion wooden floors, and equip it with sun umbrellas and outdoor furniture; paint the exterior of the container with dark paint (such as black) to contrast with the natural wood interior, enhancing visual impact.

4. Personalization and Integration of Regional Culture

  1. Exterior decoration: Spray anti-rust paint on the surface of the container, and use wooden grilles or green plant walls locally to soften the industrial feel; set up a small wooden deck patio at the entrance, paired with highly transparent glass doors to create a natural atmosphere.
  2. Cultural elements: Refer to the layout of traditional Chaoshan folk houses such as "Xia Shan Hu" and "Si Dian Jin", forming courtyard spaces through the staggered combination of containers; incorporate intangible cultural heritage elements such as Chaoshan embroidery and wood carvings into the interior decoration to enhance cultural recognition.
