Case Study | Permanent Housing Units Built with a Modular Timber Building System

Admin September 12, 2026

This musician's home in the UK covers 10 square meters and was built with a modular timber building system that integrates robotics and automation, aiming to deliver high-quality, beautifully designed, and sustainable affordable housing.

The project's owners are two musicians in Bristol who will use the space as an office and rehearsal room. The housing units can be easily customized for location and use, offering unique structures. They also feature thermal and acoustic insulation, enabling noise reduction while keeping the space well lit.

The modular system mainly consists of building blocks made from a renewable material; these blocks are robotically prefabricated and assembled into housing units. The timber building modules can be disassembled and reassembled for new uses, reducing material waste and aligning with circular design principles.

Because the number of modules used in the project is fixed, the cost at each stage is determined. Manufacture of the timber components takes place at a local citizen-led manufacturing hub. Prefabrication of the blocks took two weeks, and the housing unit itself was completed in just seven days.
