Case Study | Beach Marina Pavilion Kissed by the Sea
The marina pavilion sits on Jericho Beach in Vancouver, British Columbia, and serves a large sailing marina. The facility provides restrooms and showers, a harbour master's office, a children's teaching space, and various workshops for maintaining boats, sails, and gear.
The project's practical operational needs, a very modest budget, and a striking site called for a simple solution that would respect the cannery and industrial heritage of the waterfront buildings that once stood on the site half a century ago.
The building form is deliberately plain. Two intersecting wedge volumes mirror each other, forming one lantern to the sea and one lantern toward the land. Facing the land are glue-laminated timber and translucent polycarbonate walls that bring light into the workshop spaces and glow along the beach at night.
Facing the sea and the marina itself are a series of garage doors leading to the shop bays and a glazed office for managing the marina. A wooden screen above the office conceals mechanical systems within the large waterfront-facing wedge. The building sits at the water's edge where the high tide meets the beach. Nearly half the project budget went to foundations and piles, leaving the design team with the challenge of meeting the project's functional needs while giving the community something more meaningful.
White standing-seam panels are used on the exterior, in the spirit of the form and colour of sails and boats. The structure is a hybrid of glue-laminated timber columns and beams with light wood-framed decks and walls. The interior is mainly construction-grade plywood, providing a tough, easily replaceable interior finish. Throughout, details are modest and practical, suited to the limited project budget.
