Can the Toilet Be Moved and Reconfigured?

Admin October 10, 2026

Certain functions or structures of the toilet can be “moved” or “reconfigured” through specific methods, but this needs to be discussed in different scenarios as follows:

Public Toilets: Signage and Area Adjustments in Tidal Toilets

In public toilets, some scenic spots (such as Huizhou West Lake) adopt a “tidal toilet” design, enabling flexible switching of functional areas through movable partitions. Under normal circumstances, the partitions are stored against the wall, not occupying space, with male and female toilet areas allocated in a fixed ratio. During peak visitor times, staff members temporarily reconfigure part of the male toilet area into a female toilet area by placing partitions and adjusting fixed signs (previously, manually adjustable sliding signs were used, but these were later replaced with fixed signs due to disputes), to alleviate queuing pressure. Such reconfigurations require standardized management to avoid confusion in signage that could lead to usage issues.

Home Bathrooms: Methods for Moving the Toilet

Adjusting the position of a toilet in a home bathroom requires selecting a method based on the moving distance:

  • Toilet Mover Method: Suitable for short-distance adjustments (within 15 cm), this method connects the original drain outlet to the new position. It is cost-effective, but the bent pipes are prone to clogging and require regular unclogging.
  • Raising the Floor Method: If the toilet needs to be moved more than 15 cm, the bathroom floor must be raised, and new pipes must be laid on top of the original ones. This method involves more complex construction but ensures smoother drainage.
  • Drilling and Pipe Reconfiguration Method: This requires professional operation, involving breaking through the floor, negotiating with neighbors below, and waterproofing. It is costly but enables long-distance movement, suitable for same-floor drainage (sunken bathrooms) or complete renovation needs. Note: Moving the toilet may disrupt the original drainage slope, increasing the risk of clogging, so the necessity must be carefully evaluated.

Overall Layout Reconfiguration: Pipe Handling is Key

If the positions of facilities such as the toilet and sink in the bathroom need to be adjusted, the inlet and outlet pipes must be reconfigured simultaneously:

  • Same-Floor Drainage (Sunken Bathroom): Pipes are buried in the sunken layer, making adjustments more convenient without penetrating the floor, suitable for large-scale adjustments.
  • Inter-Floor Drainage: Pipes pass through the floor to connect to the unit below. Adjustments require negotiation with neighbors and ensuring the integrity of the waterproof layer to avoid leakage disputes. Core Principle: Any pipe-related reconfigurations must be carried out by professionals to ensure compliance with building codes.
