Can the Toilet Reserved Opening Be Moved?

Admin October 22, 2026

Whether the toilet reserved opening can be moved depends on the situation, as discussed below:

1. Reserved pipe connection and unfilled ground at house delivery
If the sewage outlet is a reserved pipe connection and the ground is approximately 300 millimeters below the floor level, homeowners can design the position of the sewage or drainage connection themselves. After modification, the ground needs to be backfilled, and the floor, waterproof layer, and tiles need to be relaid. This type of modification has relatively low technical difficulty, but it is necessary to ensure that the waterproof layer construction meets standards to avoid later leakage.

2. Fixed pipe connection and no elevation difference on the ground after house delivery
If the pipe connection is already fixed and the ground is level, it is necessary to dig up the ground and reconnect the pipe to the new position. After backfilling, the focus should be on repairing the waterproof layer. The workload is relatively large, but it will not affect the sewage discharge function. Key restrictions: Modifications should avoid load-bearing structures and must not damage the main pipe connection, as this may violate property regulations or affect building safety.

3. When the floor tiles have already been laid

  • Technical feasibility conditions: The drainage pipe must be made of PVC material, with adjustment space below, and the moving distance should be ≤10 cm (otherwise, the drainage branch pipe needs to be rearranged), and the damaged tile area can be repaired locally.
  • Practical difficulties: It is necessary to pry up the tiles and may damage the waterproof layer, increasing costs (approximately 500-1500 yuan); a slope of 2% must be ensured for every 1 cm moved, otherwise, blockage is likely; for sunken toilets, cooperation from the downstairs neighbor is required to modify the pipes.
  • Alternative solutions:
    • Toilet offset connector: Suitable for moving distances ≤5 cm, with a cost of approximately 200-500 yuan. The construction is fast but increases the risk of blockage. Its common moving distance is 5-10 cm, and in special cases, it can reach 15 cm, but it is generally not recommended to exceed this range.
    • Re-drilling and pipe modification: It is necessary to locate the new hole, cut the tiles, adjust the pipes, redo the waterproofing, and retile. This takes 2-3 days and costs approximately 2000-4000 yuan.
    • Matching toilet: Measure the existing hole distance (commonly 30 cm/40 cm) and purchase the corresponding model. For non-standard hole distances, a custom flange ring can be made (adjustable within an error of ±2 cm).

4. Restrictions by property management regulations
The part above the connection can be modified, but the part below the connection to the main pipe is prohibited from being changed, especially the main sewage outlet for toilet fixtures. Modifications require drilling holes in the floor slab, which may cut off steel bars, damage load-bearing structures, and affect the pipe layout of the downstairs neighbor.

Precautions:

  • After modification, a 24-hour closed water test should be conducted;
  • Use odor-proof silicone flanges to seal the pipes;
  • It is recommended to entrust the work to a certified plumber.

Comprehensive suggestion: If not necessary,优先考虑 (preferably consider) using an offset connector or replacing the toilet to reduce construction complexity and long-term risks.
